EDIT. After returning and reviewing the cctv footage it clearly shows the rabbits pulling at the gate to open it and not my child. It's a broken gate with no latch. My son was trying to close it to stop them escaping, he eventually managed to close it but the rabbits came and pulled at it again until it swung open. The person showing us the cctv agreed it was a problem with the gate and not my son.
Please Google "picking a rabbit up by its ears", it's the wrong way, everyone knows that.
We have been here many times before as we live close by and always reccomend it to friends but after today I doubt we will go there again. They have rabbits in a fenced pen and we know they are not allowed out as the kids have petted them before. Today we went down there and the pen gate was open and some of the rabbits were out. One of my son's tried to close the gate but it swung open again. They were trying to put the rabbits back in when the owner comes shouting and screaming at them for letting the rabbits out. We tried to explain that they were already out and we were trying to close the gate but they weren't having it. She picked the rabbits up by their ears and chucked them back over the fence into the pen which further upset...

We visited twice during our 6 week stay in Calheta and both times were very pleased. I would classify Calhera Green as "Classic Maderian, with a slight, refreshing modern twist, in clean, comfortable, and beautiful setting."
Menu includes all of local staples (skewered and grilled meat, limpets, fried maze, etc) but also has some very welcomed vegetable dishes/side dishes (pureed sweet potato, quinoa salad, sautéed spinach, and more).
The inclusion of vegetables on the menu (other than leaf salad with vinegar like most other restaurants) was one of the highlights...why don't most other restaurants in the area/island include more of the fantastic vegetables they harvest...other than potatoes...?) Desserts are very delicious and thoughtful, however, slightly too sweet for our preference.
Staff are awesome. All of a more recent generation than most restaurants we visited. Accommodating and attentive. A+
We visited with our 18 month old son. His favourite part was the garden in front of the restaurant that had rabbits, cats, and chickens to interact with.
The decor is clean and simple. Very pleasing on the eye and allows the natural beauty of the surrounding forrest/mountain to be...
Read moreLet’s start by saying that this place is phenomenal. From the moment we walked in, the staff were very friendly, happy for us to sit where ever we wanted and move the furniture to get a better view of the amazing ocean views.
The menu has lots of local dishes and a large variety of grilled meats. Lots of different wines and some really cool craft beers.
I got a milkshake passion fruit IPA, which sounded like a wild ride, it was super refreshing and paired well with a black americano.
I got a t bone steak which was probably the best steak I’ve genuinely ever had, it was well priced, very well seasoned and served exactly how I ordered it. It looked so good I forgot to take a photo, had to jump right in. We got the grilled salmon and spinach side dish. Both were very fresh and tasty.
Finished with a tiramisu which was a fun variant, it was made with a ginger/nutmeg flavoured biscuit which really added another level of flavour to the dish.
The location is gorgeous, there are hens and a rabbit cage in the large garden that’s in front of the eatery.
A friendly cat became our friend also while we waited.
Highly recommend this place. It’s easily our favourite...
