Can we give 10 stars to this awesome Cafe? If we could we would. First I would like to say that this was absolutely, by far the BEST BEST BEST coffee I have had since moving to Portugal almost 2 years ago!!
This little cafe is in the small, homey town of Fala. Just outside of Coimbra and it is lovely. Think Cheers but as a Cafe. When we arrived just before 9:00am on a Sunday morning people were waiting outside for the Cafe to open. We thought ok, this must be the only game in town and everyone gets their coffee here. But no, there was another Cafe close by and they were here. Yay!! Locals, waiting to get into a Cafe or restaurant is always a great sign for us.
The petite, beautiful shop owner rushed up and opened the front door. The patons filed in, helping her open windows, turn on machines and get the TV at the right volume. Like an extended family!! We were happily surprised to see everyone pitching in and helping out to get the cafe running for the day ahead. The owner was then free to get these little espressos out faster than people could drink them!! The conversation flowed, laughter was loud and we just sat at a table smiling at each other and waiting our turn. As others entered the cafe they would say Bom Dia!! to the whole cafe, as if another family member had just arrived. What a beautiful family atmosphere.
The owner actually came over to us at our table and we ordered our abatanada and galão, claro, and off she went to make them. They arrived and after trying my galão, I was giddy!! Genuinely, the best cup of coffee I have had since moving to Coimbra and actually, in a very long time. When the rush was in a bit of a lull we ordered a couple of pastries. My husband had a delicious nata and I had a yummy small pastry cup with chicken. It arrives cold so if you want it warmed, you will have to request that at the time you order.
We wound up using our terrible, broken and limited Portuguese to chat with the owner a bit and a few other people as well. One diner, who spoke wonderful English, told us that she had attended Coimbra University to obtain her second level degree there. It amazes me how open the Portuguese people are.
The group was very kind to the new couple who was looking for a cup of coffee and left with a wonderful experience that...
