Restaurante Provenance — Restaurant in Montemor-o-Novo

We stumbled upon Restaurant Provenance on the way back from a trip with friends and it turned out to be such a wonderful surprise. We planned to stop just for lunch, but ended up staying for hours!

The food is incredibly fresh and, as we learned, sourced from the surrounding agroforestry project linked to the small hotel next door. The dishes featured creative twists on local ingredients—something I really appreciated, as it's rare to find in Portugal without paying a premium. The broad bean pâté was to die for , and the wine list was excellent.

The setting is just beautiful—stylishly designed with both indoor and outdoor seating that makes the most of the views over the gardens, forest, and even a castle. As an Australian, I especially loved the shaded alfresco dining, which is surprisingly hard to find locally.

The owners, a lovely couple, were there that day and warmly welcomed us, even giving us a tour of the agroforestry project. With kids in tow, the garden, play area, and trampoline made it perfect for families—no one wanted to leave!

I had two meals at Provenance during my trip to Montemor, and it was a delightful discovery. Montemor isn’t typically friendly for non-carnivores, so I was surprised to find vegetarian and vegan options on Provenance's menu.

I tried several of their dishes with mushrooms, and they were all delicious. The standouts were the rice with local mushrooms and the veggie“pica pau”.

The wine list is also a highlight, including small producers like Morgado do Quintão and Folias do Baco, available by the glass if you don't want to break the bank.
