Restaurant Rustik — Restaurant in Olhão

Overall 5* for Rustik for the very simple reason they went out of their way for us. But we only learned this later. The meal was huge and lovely.

With our knowledge of Portugese and their knowledge of English, it was always going to be tricky making ourselves understood. But with good humour and a willingness on both sides, we got there.

It later turned out that we had interrupted their preparations for a wedding celebration taking place shortly after we had arrived. And preparing our meals diverted their attention away from that at just the wrong time. But they handled it all so brilliantly, we were completely unaware until driving off, when we saw the wedding party arrive!

Das Wichtigste vorab, hier erlebt man ein unschlagbares Preisleistungsverhältnis. Gewiß gibt es radfiniertere Küche, doch lecker ist es hier auch und man genießt portugiesische Küche authentisch. Wie so oft werden auch hier diverse Grillgerichte angeboten, von verschiedenem Fleisch bis Fisch. Mein Rindersteak war gut, wenn auch das Fleisch in mehreren dünnen Scheiben serviert wurde und ein paar zähe Stellen hatte. Der Grad der Garung war einwandfrei, ich würde es also ein anderes Mal wieder nehmen. Dazu gab es Pommes Frittes und die waren außergewöhnlich gut, nicht zu dünn, kartoffelig innen, knusprig außen und in sehr gutem Frittieröl gemacht, so daß sie weder Luft enthielten noch irgendwelche Ausreißer mit keksartiger Konsistenz nervten. Ich hatte selten so perfekte Pommes Frittes. Aber das war längst noch nicht alles. Man erhält dort im Prinzip ein Menü. Vorab gab es grünen Salat mit Tomaten und Zwiebeln, für den man aber selbst das Dressing machen muß. Ich empfehle, dazu auch Zucker zu bestellen, er macht das Dressing viel gaumenfreundlicher. Vom Salat erhält man gerne ohne Aufpreis Nachschlag. Ketchup aus der Flasche zu den Pommes und Piri-Piri-Sauce zum Fleisch waren ebenfalls inbegriffen. Es wurden diverse Desserts zur Auswahl genannt. Ich nahm den Fruchtsalat, er war frisch gemacht. Dazu wählte ich einen klaren Schnaps als Gewürz in den Dessert. Aufgrund eines Missverständnisses bekam ich ein Schnapsglas voll, die Hälfte hätte auch gereicht. Das klärte ich im Anschluß per Übersetzungs-App. Ich empfahl, den Fruchtsalat doch grundsätzlich so anzubieten. Und zum Schluß sollte ich unbedingt noch einen Kaffee oder Tee nehmen, aber das mag ich nicht nach dem Essen. Ganz zu Beginn wurden mir diverse alkoholische Getränke zum Essen vorgeschlagen, ich nahm lieber eine Coca Cola. Diese war eiskalt und damit wie es sein sollte. Und alles zusammen kostete nur unfassbare 13,- Euro. Das Ambiente dort ist irgendwo zwischen Bar und Dorfrestaurant...

Well we wanted something quick and good. We found this based on the reviews. I like places like with simple and basic dishes. But what they make just is purely delicious. Often restaurants try to be fancy with their dishes and try to make a nice presentation. But if you stick to the basics and know how to cook or grill with simple ingredients and make dish speak for itself this is art. Rustik achieved just that. We both had a grilled Dorada and it was wonderfully grilled!!! You get basic vegetables but it complements the fish and does not distract the flavor. Both owners are super nice!
