Restaurante Tia Alice — Restaurant in Ourém

I recently visited Tia Alice in Fátima, Portugal, a restaurant often described as one of the best in the area. Perhaps that reputation comes from the days of the original owner, but unfortunately, my experience didn’t live up to it. The starter,melon with ham, was the highlight of the meal. Fresh, seasonal melon made it simple but very enjoyable. Sadly, everything after that was a letdown. The casserole was especially disappointing: just a couple of small pieces of pork mixed with mostly cabbage. To make things worse, the pork contained cartilage, which meant having to discreetly spit it out at the table, not exactly pleasant. The atmosphere also left much to be desired. The dining room was brightly lit, more like sitting in a kitchen than in a cozy restaurant. The cave-like design might seem interesting at first glance, but in reality, it echoed with the sound of chairs scraping across the stone floor, which was jarring throughout the meal. The noise of children running around added to the impression that we were eating in a playground rather than a fine restaurant. This is a wonderful Portuguese restaurant with high quality dishes. Many of the dishes are for two persons so be prepared to share. We recommend the sea bass and monk fish rice and the shrimp with rice. The veal is also very render.

The desserts are all amazing but the sheep's milk cheese is fantastic. Great coffee, good wine.

It is very difficult to make a reservation as the restaurant has one phone number and they want people to make reservations between 10-noon, so the phone line is constantly busy. At the restaurant people without bookings flood the lobby so the wait staff are constantly telling people that seatings are 12:30 and 14:30 so it is distracting to the service. Meanwhile we had to wait for our order to be taken then again to pay the bill. So it's a great meal if you can...

O que outrora (há mais de 20 anos) foi um restaurante de referência a nível nacional é hoje um espaço a evitar, em minha opinião, evidentemente. A Tia Alice cozinheira de mão cheia, de grande talento, mulher de fé, conheci a nos anos 90 no seu restaurante, onde ia muito, em almoços de trabalho. O seu paladar apurado fazia as delícias de muitos que por lá passavam. As mesas eram de ferro, as cadeiras de madeira com uns coxins. Desde a vitela ao robalo, da açorda ao pato tudo era feito na hora. O espaço teve inclusive 1 * Michelin (3anos) que já perdeu. Ganhou outros prémios (garfo do boa cama/ boa mesa e ordem de mérito do Sr. PR.) É frequentado pela nata portuguesa e não só, desde presidentes a escritores, músicos, arquitectos de nome na nossa praça. Assim, passei então um destes dias e apresentei me sem mesa marcada para almoçar às 13h21. Eu e muitos mais atrás de mim. Desço as escadas, abro a porta, aguardo. Aparece então uma Sra de mau humor, arrogante. Peço mesa para 2 per (e com duas mesas vazias, disse me que estavam reservadas) e diz me que não há mesas e que já não serviam almocos ????!!!! Pensei ,mas são 13h30 ???!!!! Escusa de esperar.... estas mesas nunca vão terminar antes das 14h00 e depois vamos encerrar. Fiquei perplexa. Eu e todos os outros atrás de mim. Limitamo nos a subir as escadas desfeitos pela forma como fomos tratados. Portanto, os actuais donos podem dizer e fazer tudo o que querem . Pessoas como estas existem em todo o lado. Choca me é a falta de noção e respeito de que têm uma herança a defender. Deviam ter respeito pelo que são e pelo que conquistaram. Como tenho toda a legitimidade de ir almoçar onde quiser e escolher o menu onde me apetecer (dantes nem menu havia, lembram se?) , não voltarei à Tia Alice e não recomendo que o façam, a não ser que queiram ser destratados e corridos escada acima de barriga vazia.
