Taberna Fornos do Rei — Restaurant in Penedono

Saturday 6th July, short visit and lunch in Penedono, our first visit. It was Medieval Fair in town, lots of people and a great atmosphere. The Taberna was of course highly recommended and we just decided to try it. As always we arrived for the opening at midday and chose to eat inside for coolness. Our table could fit four but it was no problem as there were also plenty of places under cover outside. We decided not to take the couvert of bread and olives, so we ordered the posta de vitela, a large and thick beef steak that is to share (32 euros). And of course no meal without a jar of the red house wine (8.50 euros if I remember). The meat was cooked exactly as we ordered, deliciously tender, the potatoes and salad were perfect too and the local wine was very nice. We skipped dessert and coffee on this occasion. Love Love Love Love everything about this restaurant! It takes you back into time during medieval times with the stoned walls, decor throughout, the small touches as you look around and the way the dinning is setup even the menu is on a scroll., how fun! After viewing the castle, we stopped in here and ordered the beef with coffee cream and we also tried the pepper cream and both were amazing! The house dessert was delicious too, a coffee mousse in a jar. Everything was seasoned perfect and plentiful. We loved their branded cups so much we purchased a few to go...

À primeira vista, o ambiente do restaurante fazia antever uma boa experiência — especialmente tendo em conta as avaliações positivas que tínhamos lido. No entanto, a primeira impressão rapidamente se desfez com a atitude do empregado, que se revelou pouco simpático e nada atencioso.

Optámos por uma posta de vitela para dois, mas assim que o prato chegou à mesa, o seu aspeto já deixava antever o pior. E confirmou-se: a carne estava dura, demasiado passada, seca e completamente sem sabor. Uma desilusão total. Nem as batatas fritas escaparam, mal fritas e sem graça.
