We found this unassuming resto on our way out of the thermal baths in Fererria and boy were we surprised! We were greeted by the chef (and the owners son-in-law Salso (sp?)). He kindly walked us through the buffet options, doing his best in English! I usually shy away from buffets, but this was really great. 3 kinds of beef, lamb, pork ribs, all stewed in a traditional sauce, baked beans, potatoes, blood pudding, fried mackerel and eel (the eel was really good too!) And a full plate of fresh salad too. All for $10 each, and it's all you can eat! Drinks and desert extra. We got a fresh made crepe, filled with ice cream and chocolate sauce on top, really really delicious! This place is a little out of the way but very much worth it! Open only 4 days a week (W/T/S/S) for lunch only. Thanks for the authentic hospitality Salso! Cheers...
Read moreOur family got there shortly after 11:30 am and seated downstairs for the buffet. The place quickly started to fill up at noon. Just park on the street in front. There was some confusion in communication (we are Canadian and only speak English) but we thought juice, coffee and dessert was included in the 10 euros buffet which it did not. Despite that, it was still great value. This was our 1st meal in the Azores and turned out to be one of our favourites. I'd think it'd be equivalent to being invited to someone's home and having their mom cook traditional Azorean food. Not fancy-looking but delicious. The staff were super-friendly and really wanted to make sure we were happy. This place is about 15 min west of Ponta Delgado, a great place to check out when visiting Sete Cidades, Ponta Ferraria or...
Read moreI honestly was skeptical of this place and it more than blew my expectations out of the water. Every single meat was fall off the bone delicious. I've cooked thousands of chickens in my first job and their chicken has me pulling every last piece off the bone. We went on a trip to the Azores and this may have been my best meal.
To top off the excellent experience our servers were top notch. Speaking both English and Portuguese and being extremely accommodating to my girlfriend's family who don't eat meat. Our entire table was very pleased with this restaurant that I had to make a review. We had plenty of more expensive meals where both the service and food was not as good.
When I return to the Azores I'll be sure to come back to O Raiao as I have grown fond of the experience they produced for me...
