I feel my shoulders dropping - with one deep breath in and out - I know I am at home. That’s the feeling for me when I go to Herdade da Matinha. There must be something in the scent, but it only takes a few minutes and I’m in total calm mode. The restaurant is run by two brothers and sons of Alfredo (the founder and resident artist). Love the kitchen (I hear it used to be accessible to the hotel guests in the past - oh how I wish that could return :)) And the food is very tasty. It goes into a Portuguese traditional direction, but still with modern ingredients. Last time I went I loved the Tomato Gazpacho and the Oxtail Croquettes! A great wine selection too and almost all wines are available per glass too - which is nice! Also currently they have a special lunch...

Following the rough road to the restaurant was certainly worth it. From the outside you cannot anticipate what waits for you inside. The rooms are all different one from the other with an eclectic style including amazing original artwork created by the owner. The staff did not disappoint. Our meal was exceptional by any standard. Waited over an hour for the seafood pasta. No excuses were made. The pasta arrived and had almost no seafood on it. It was really sad to look at and such a disappointment for 17 euros. Also the two hotel dogs will remain at your table begging barking for food. I love dogs but its not really acceptable in a high priced...
