The best meal of our Porto adventure!

We arrived on Monday without reservations having checked for restaurants in the area as we were on a little drive through the Douro Valley. The restaurant itself is based on the Sandeman estate alongside a little hotel and a wine shop. Do not get discouraged if someone tells you that the restaurant is closed, go and check for yourself - we did and we ended up having the best meal of our Português adventure.

We were warmly welcomed and given the choice of the table since the restaurant was empty. Our table had a view of the patio with its fountain and olive trees, which must be a wonderful seating area in the summer, and the green hills of the valley unfolding behind it. The restaurant itself has a very intimate atmosphere with tables spread apart for maximum comfort.

Whilst we had a pretty good idea about what we wanted to try our host was incredibly helpful in describing the dishes and making recommendations based on what we were looking for.

We settled for their home made sourdough bread with orange salad and saffron and sausage butter before starting our meal with baked pumpkin and cheese and octopus salad. I will be singing praises to their baker, who clearly mastered the art of a perfectly crisp crust, for many weeks to come. The octopus salad was delicious; a tender, grilled octopus served on a bed of sweet potato purée accompanied by pickled red cabbage and parsley and onion salsa. All generously sprinkled with beautiful olive oil. The absolute winner however was the baked pumpkin and cheese. The sweetness of the pumpkin is balanced by the sharpness of cheese making this a perfect spread for the crackers it is served with. The portion could easily be shared between two/three people if you’re looking for a good sharing starter.

For our mains we choose the veal with baked rice and burnt cabbage, and a cod with puréed potatoes and pickles. Again both dishes were cooked to perfection. The cod was soft and flaky while the veal was simply melting in your mouth.

We finished off the meal with Portuguese version of cream brûlée which was infused with rosemary to cat through the sweetness. It was very good and again perfectly balanced like all the other dishes we had.

The restaurant is rather on the pricey side - we paid €126 for two and it only included one glass of wine. The price can quickly go up if you get an opportunity to get one of the wines from their extensive list. Having said that the food and the service are definitely worth the price.

A huge thank you to the team at Seixo Restaurant for turning our impromptu visit into a memorable experience! We will be...

Confira os destaques do menu degustado no Seixo by Vasco Coelho Santos:

Viva a felicidade — e o sabor...

I made reservations here months in advance and it was so incredibly worth it! My family and I (10 of us total) came for lunch. The drive there was spectacular. I had originally asked for outside seating but do to the heat, they set us up inside. I wasn't happy with this at first but Philipe assured me it was in our best interests due to the hot weather outside and he was right. I cannot begin to describe the level of service, attention to detail, quality of food and wine we experienced. If I could give this place 10 stars I would. From the moment we walked in, to Philipe giving us a lift back to our cars on the gold cart, it was an experience my family and I are still talking about weeks after our trip. Bruna was wonderful to work with when it came to makinr reservations and welcomed us warmly when we arrived. We are a Portuguese and often loud family who loves to laugh and have fun and they welcomed us with open arms. I cannot recommend this place enough. I cannot wait to come back again, exceptional...

Fantastic lunch at this beautiful winery on tip of a hill. The journey there is already amazing but the restaurant really delivers an extra dimension. Staff is super knowledgeable and friendly, they take the time for all questions. The inside dining room is stylish and cool during the day. Food was fantastic though I have to warn others (like others have done here before as well) that portion sizes are quite large. I had lunch with my wife and we think that three starters plus a salad would have been enough. We asked them to pack the pork belly main dish which they kindly did and for which my kids are very grateful! We had the veal tongue, the special Portuguese sausage dish and the tomato salad with almonds and nectarines. Highlight was also the huge bottle with white port they produced for my wife at the end of the lunch.

The resturant is part of the complex that includes also the winery, the shop and an hotel. The location is beautiful, on a high hill with magnificent view. It is a bit difficult to reach the place. Waze was quite confused and took us via the exit road. Better follow the sign on the road The resturant itself is also nice both inside and outside. As for the food: A vael paella for two persons (53 EURO), was nice, but was short on meat part (maybe for one is could by fine). We ordred a second bottle of water (tap water for 2.5 Euro!) which did not arrive, but we were charged for. Of course it was cleared from the bill later. In summary, I expected more for a high class resturant.

Where delicious home made food meets high end cuisine. You really get the both of both worlds with this one. The atmosphere is amazing with the surrounding vineyards and the winding Douro river. The staff is impeccably trained but without loosing a single bit of the northern Portugal kindness and warmth. And the food… rich, tasty and beautifully presented. The perfect finish after a wine tasting. Don’t let the few reviews fool you: this is an amazing restaurant that will not disappoint.
