Assets:
The hotel's location is ideal for exploring the north-central part of the island: Monte Café, the botanical garden, the Saint Nicolas waterfall...
The scenery offered by the hotel, both from the restaurant and from the building in which the rooms are located, is grandiose: bird-rich forest moat, pretty garden, capital and ocean visible in the distance when the weather is clear.
The breakfasts included in the room rate are rich and tasty, as are the almost gourmet lunch and dinner menus.
The restaurant staff are friendly and helpful, even if it's hard to get through to those who speak only Portuguese.
The wooden building housing the room I stayed in is attractive on the outside and practical on the inside. The room had a double bed (but only a bedside table), a side table, a rack and a small separate bathroom. The shower had hot water and a good flow.
Downside:
Contrary to what the Booking description of the hotel says:
I didn't have a tray or a kettle in my bedroom;
I didn't have access to a collective kitchen, cooking utensils, a microwave, a fridge or a dining table;
I didn't have access to a living room;
the bedrooms are not soundproof, as every night, I could hear my neighbors speak, cough, watch videos and so on, as if they were just next to me.
Some pictures visible on Booking also misrepresent the reality, as pictures #2, #5, #11, #12 and #13 show a nice living room, plus a dining room and kitchen that not everyone has access to. (I didn't...) And picture #4 doesn't seem to depict Roça Saudade guesthouse at all...
In addition, I would have found my stay easier and more enjoyable if :
I had a little more light in my room at night (the 2 lamps currently available dimly illuminate the room) ;
