Koufu is a chain of food courts, mostly located around residential estates, yet mainly nested within established institutions. For example, West Mall at Bukit Batok, the Singapore Management University, the Singapore Polytechnic, and Gek Poh Shopping Centre.
Koufu @ Gek Poh is conveniently located for residents nearby. It is within a stone's throw from residents of Gek Poh Ville of Jurong West Streets 74 & 75, Jurong West Avenue 5, and the private estate of Westwood.
Housed within the centre's proper, it also extends outdoor where a sheltered area with fifteen tables may sit 60 visitors.
Indoor, about twelve stalls skirt around the sides, with the main drink stall sitting right beside the entrance points, to cater to visitors both within and without.
The place is well-maintained and clean. Within each stall, cooking space is separated from the service counter by a service wall, thus, keeping the noise of preparations down and agreeable.
Purportedly to cater to customers from diverse ethnicities, Koufu @ Gek Poh is majority Chinese. There is only one Halal-certified vendor serving Western Food and not a single Indian.
I shall endeavour to note the names of the stalls, which may help rouse reader's interest to visit, the next time I drop in. For this time, suffice to say, these mostly Chinese stalls are attracting large crowds. Be it for their unique tastes, or the cool air-conditioned environment, or the inviting cleanliness, patrons seem to leave grateful and satisfied.
My favourite stall is called simply Nasi Lemak. Although it has a Malay name, it is actually run by Chinese operatives.
What turned me into a regular is the taste of the rice, cooked in coconut milk, with pieces of pandan leaves that turn it green. It is so unlike many others and wonderfully unique.
Added to this is the customary fried ikan bilis (anchovies) and peanut, with a dash of sambal (chili paste) that is sweet and heavenly.
I unfailingly would ask for a chicken drumstick to be included. It is relatively pricey, yet affordable. But it is the meaty freshness that beckons, unlike the imported frozen variety. It is also big, as if the chicken that it came from, had spent time in the gym to beef up.
The fry is even and well-timed, that the meat maintains chewiness and juiciness. Words can hardly describe the taste in my bud. Hop on over and sample, not only the Nasi Lemak, but other dishes too, that must have lingered favourably, to make those visitors leave grateful...
