Queen of Wok, famous for its fish head steamboat is founded by an ex singer from Hong Kong. Besides the renowned fish head steamboat, they also serve up Zi char style dishes as part of set meals, suitable for a casual gathering among friend groups of different sizes.
With my family of 5, I ordered the set meal priced at $175 which includes the batang fish slice steamboat, bean curd, hae zhor, har cheong gai (prawn paste chicken) and prawns coated in lemon sauce. We also topped up for a plate of sambal kang kong for $14. For drinks, we got the Pu-Er tea which comes in a cup and refillable for $2.20.
The food standard across the board is generally decent. However, I am a little disappointed with what I came for, the fish slice steamboat. The broth was very average tasting, less flavorful than normal fish soup you find in hawker centres or food court. However, generous fish slices were given, which compensates for the underwhelming broth. The bean curd was average but the gravy goes well with rice. Sambal Kang Kong isn’t too spicy, great for individuals who cannot really take spice.
The two dishes that were not to my liking were the Prawn paste chicken as well as the prawns coated in lemon sauce. Prawn paste chicken tasted just like average deep fried chicken, with no prominent aroma that can be found in usual prawn paste chicken. For the prawns, the lemon sauce was too overpowering and overwhelmed the original flavor of the prawns. As they allow you to customize the preparation methods for both the chicken and prawn dish, I would recommend staying away from the above mentioned methods.
To my surprise, the star of the show is actually the hae zhor. Besides the quantity that exceeded expectations, the quality of each individual golden nugget is nothing to scoff at. Crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, every bite takes you to heaven. I probably went to heaven 4 or 5 times this evening. The sweet sauce that accompanies the round golden nuggets was also well prepared.
Service wise, the staff were efficient when it comes to serving the food as well as clearing the empty plates, making the table feel less occupied. The ambience on the other hand, is what you would expect if you eat in a typical Hong Kong eatery. The boisterous environment here would not be suitable if you are easily overstimulated or you are just looking for a quiet place to have your dinner.
All in all, a decent first time at Queen of Wok. Although not all the dishes were executed amazingly, there are several dishes that would make me gravitate back to this store if I’m...
Read moreThe restaurant has aircon and it is clean. Reservation can be done online via Google Map. The restaurant was not crowded on a Wed evening. Efficient and competent service. I explained I wanted an extra ladder for each of the five diners due to the increased number of Covid cases; the waitresses obliged immediately. Safe Management Measures (SMM) were met. We paid $30 for each of our 5 pax. We had the medium size Red Grouper Hot Pot, Stir-fry Qing Long Vegetables , Omelette and Prawn Paste Mid-Joint Wings. The dishes were delicious and served piping hot. All of us agreed that the food is good and we had a good dinner. The soup was umami - a creamy white. It was tasty but not salty. I did not feel thirsty after dinner. The best thing - we could the soup refilled repeatedly. A set of cut chilli and chilli vinaigrette was included for each of us without having to ask. I was able to park my car along the URA carpark. I have dined at the same premise when it was operated by another Fish Head Hot Pot owner, but I would say that the food offered by Queen of Wok is much better. I would dine here again if I have a craving for Fish Head Hot Pot....
Read moreHar cheong gai chicken wing is a complete ripoff. $14 for 5 pieces. Is it frozen chicken wings? If it is not, i would rather they use frozen wings and charge a cheaper price. Because even if it is fresh/chilled it must be a very sad and malnourished chicken. Cannot taste the prawn paste at all. Very disappointed. Lime juice is just sugar water might get diabetes from it.
Only thing good we had is the fish steamboat and the hei zhou (prawn rolls). Steamboat generous serving of fish and vegetables. Ordered $42 with batang fish slice. I like that it has yam inside. Lovely addition. Heizhou flaky on the outside but inside is meaty.
Service still charged me for the wet wipe even though we did not use it. Only realized that it is charged after payment made via card, by then it’s too late. 40 cents each but it is the integrity.
A bit haolian, nothing wrong. One whole television/wall plastered with pictures of famous celebrities that supposedly visited. Even have ronaldinho haha. Parking at the lanes adjacent and afterwords, quite easy to find if you come early but during peak hour definitely a problem
