One of the hidden gems of the area. Great food from local and eco sources, wide selection of wines and beers and a cozy atmosphere.
The restaurant doesn't look anything special from the road, and we stopped here by chance. We were greeted with a lovely terrace and offered some local craft beers - we opted for Lokalc, made just a couple kilometres north.
This place was first recommended to me for their pizza, and while we didn't end up eating any, if they taste anything like the divine bread we were brought at first, they're a treat. The waiter gave us smoked flaky salt, pepper, and olive oil for the salad, and when I complimented the oil, he brought us a couple other bottles of Istrian olive oil, each better than the other.
I ordered the Krškopoljc pork secreto made from indigenous Slovenian pig. It was served with a side of polenta with hazelnuts and a couple of vegetables and drowning in delicious port sauce. My partner ordered the homemade gnocchi with freshly grated black truffle on top, done right there at the table.
The relatively modest prices at around 15 euro for each entree did not prepare us for such enjoyment. Some of it was the appetite we worked up while cycling there through the beautiful scenery, but even after I was full, I was eyeing the food the staff was serving other tables. The pork was, as expected, wonderful, with the side of polenta being the most pleasant surprise. The homemade gnocchi were deliciously soft and the fresh truffle you wouldn't expect in a restaurant that is by all means in the middle of nowhere was just the icing on the cake.
Speaking of cake: the cheesecake we got on recommendation from one of the waiters was a perfect way to round out the meal. Served with various fruits prepared in different ways - from glaze to dried to fresh - each bite was slightly different from the other, which made the dessert very enjoyable.
While we were leaving, we saw the staff bring a nearby table a selection of wines and overheard a waiter explain the story of one of them. Needless to say, we will be back...
Read moreWell, this place is popular with locals for a reason. It is surprisingly cheap for the venue, and the beautiful view of the Sava Valley. The pizzas are huge, good value, and REALLY good. Their menu offers much more too. My wife doesn't eat meat or dairy and was truly happy with this place. Their wines are very good. They have craft ale. They work hard and their staff are friendly and happy, even at the busiest time; always...
