GREAT PLACE AND FOOD
The Afro-Boer Bakers café and dining is a unique and intriguing establishment that combines several appealing elements to me: a welcoming atmosphere, diverse food offerings, and a commitment to preserving cultural heritage and promoting local flavors. Let's review some key aspects of this café that I visited.
Ambiance and Setting: The cafe's high ceilings, big windows, and open lawn spaces create a pleasant and inviting environment. These features likely contribute to a comfortable and spacious feel, making it suitable for various occasions, from casual outings to special events.
Family-Friendly Environment: The presence of an outside kids' play area is a great addition for families. It provides a solution for parents seeking a place to dine while ensuring their children have a safe and enjoyable time. This feature adds to the cafe's inclusivity and potential customer base.
Food Philosophy: The commitment to a farm-to-plate philosophy and Slow Food principles aligns with the growing demand for sustainable and locally sourced ingredients. This approach not only benefits the environment but also supports local farmers and producers.
Cultural Fusion: The blend of traditional sentiment and Afrikaans heritage combined with local flavors in the menu is a distinctive feature. It offers diners an opportunity to explore and appreciate the rich culinary heritage of South Africa. It's an excellent way to introduce customers to unique and authentic tastes.
Preservation of Heritage: The cafe's emphasis on preserving and recognizing heritage in African and South African food is commendable. It not only serves as a culinary experience but also as a cultural journey, educating patrons about the history and significance of the dishes.
In summary, Afro-Boer Bakers Cafe and Dining has a promising concept that blends culture, sustainability, and culinary excellence. I enjoyed the experience and will visit again when I...
Read moreI acknowledge that there is verbiage about how everything is prepared freshly and that patrons should understand that food may take a little longer as a result, but a few orders of very simple breakfasts took almost an hour to arrive and when it finally did, the food was cold. This food was not freshly prepared, it was standing somewhere for some time before being served (or the kitchen truly believes that cold fried and scrambled eggs are better).
On top of everything, the croissant was just standard room temperature; it was not heated at all, so instead of the crispy, flakey, buttery goodness of a croissant, I got what seemed like a mass of semi cooked, chewy dough.
For menu items priced at this level, I expect much more. I think a fast food breakfast would be better to eat.
The coffee was acceptable but not the best (my guess is that the beans have been over roasted but I'm no expert).
Sitting in the garden area is very nice; a good atmosphere and very relaxing. It can be a little chilly; we visited on the morning of 2019/02/23 which was quite a warm day overall, but the cold breeze in the garden definitely added some occasional discomfort.
No complaints about the service, but no compliments either. We had to ask multiple times for specific condiments, because the server either didn't hear us or didn't understand. It could have been due to a language barrier.
The restaurant fills up quite quickly; by the time we left there was a sign outside advising prospective patrons that all tables were fully occupied. Good for them, I guess, but I don't think I'll return.
Edit: Tried to reach out to Michelle, but the e-mail address she provided was not reachable and my e-mail...
Read moreI thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Afro-boer. Some advice, MAKE A RESERVATION. This place is always busy and you're most likely going to get turned around if you want to dine in and just pitch. One would think that because they are always fully booked that the restaurant would be packed to the brim with no breathing space, but even if they are full like that you don't get the feel that they are because the place is spacious and arranged in such a way that the table next to you is not on your face. The design on the inside and outside is also quiet beautiful, so you wouldn't mind sitting on the outside or inside. The servers are nice and do their jobs quiet well. They aren't too much on your faces and give you space to just be with your company and take your time, but are they are still there when you need them. It's honestly quiet pleasant :) Personally, I wasn't satisfied with my meal. It tasted great but it was a WAY smaller than what I thought it would be and I was still a bit hungry afterwards. But the people I was with were satisfied with theirs so just be careful what you order. I advice to try to find out more about your meal from your waiter before you order because menus don't always give you a good idea of how much the food you're eating (one of the people I came with also got way MORE that what they were expecting). But for the quality of the food they serve, the prices were really fair. I would say that you are truly getting what you paid for. Definitely would recommend for a date, dining alone, or a family gathering of...
