What a lovely restaurant. A trip to buy fish in the South is, not complete without a trip to this fantastic spot. I always love a good Jozi find! It's my speciality..... ask me about the best, the cheapest, the quietest, the friendliest of anything in this beautiful city and my take will be different from popular opinion. I even grudge telling people my finds. My finds if Korean or Chinese or Portugese are where the proprietor is from that country, barely speaks English, sounds like they are rude as hell to all customers (but not - generally it's the bloody English language, once I get to know the owners), staff are friendly but not swishing around with over-friendliness of the fake variety. Big fear - what if it gets too popular or, worse still gets the dressed-up (god forbid!!!) crowd - who look like they haven't eaten ever, Instagram every morsel, ask for wi-fi and are rude to the people who work there, but have to bend my rules for this place. Post-covid, i am feeling morally compelled to make people support my local joints. This place - authentic Portugese food, good food, Freshly Prepared, reasonably prized, generous helpings with the kindest, friendliest staff and the hideous red table clothes, cannot be allowed to close down. Pre-covid - bustling with local Portugese origin crowd, families and loads of the older Portugese crowd. Alas, now their take-away is busy as always, the restaurant is quiet........ I am surprised on a Saturday for lunch at 1, where I am the first person to have ordered the special of the day, (They have this tradition of making stews or soups that generally need hours of prepping and cooking as a special for the weekends. When the pot runs out, the servings of the specials are done! So, people awaited and vied for these tasty surprises - the Special of the Saturday lunch.....) or, a quiet lunch turnout that makes the waitresses shake their heads and wonder if they will have jobs at the end of the month. Good owners who for three years kept the staff employed, despite the pandemic.... Not on! Despite all my reservations - I am begging the hipsters, the instagram-mers, the suburban crowd to support the local joints! I am counting on your large wallets, disposable incomes and mostly your quest for new things that you will support this place and keep it alive, so that when you have moved on to your fashionable spots, 'be there' to be seen places, this joint will continue for us - good food...
Read moreFirst time visit to this authentic Portuguese restaurant. I was blown away by the amazing food and portion size. The table service was a bit slow even though the place was not busy at 12h30 on a Saturday. If you looking to be served traditional Portuguese food, this is the place to go. Most menu items found here are not served at other so called Portuguese restaurants. I will definitely...
Read moreVery nice little place. I had a mushroom rump steak and my wife had a seafood platter. The steak was tender and the mushroom sauce was great. The steak was not as grilled as expected and tasted like it had been boiled and then grilled. The wife had the same problem and she was not very happy with the flavour of the prawns, which she said tasted as if it had been boiled and...
