Review of De Vette Mossel
Ah, De Vette Mossel β where the seafood is fresher than the gossip at a small-town church bazaar, and the vibe is as lekker as an unexpected public holiday!
From the moment you arrive, you're greeted by the host, who might just be the funniest and most entertaining person youβve ever met outside a braai. Heβs the kind of guy who could make you laugh while explaining tax law, but thankfully, he sticks to making jokes about seafood and life in general. Itβs like attending a comedy show with an all-you-can-eat buffet β and you donβt even have to tip for the laughs!
Now, letβs talk about the food. The seafood is so good, it feels like it was personally caught by Poseidon and seasoned by Ouma. The mussels, prawns, and snoek are so fresh they practically swim onto your plate. And then thereβs the meat pot β a hearty, flavor-packed creation that tastes like it was made with a dash of magic and a whole lot of South African soul. Even the kids are catered for, with entertainment that keeps them so busy youβll wonder if you should ask for their energy secrets.
But the real treat here is the Afrikaans kulture experience. Itβs not just a meal; itβs a celebration of everything that makes South African culture unique. From the charming decor to the camaraderie of strangers who become instant friends over a shared plate of mussels, youβll leave feeling more connected to the rich traditions of this beautiful land.
In short, De Vette Mossel isnβt just a restaurant β itβs an event. Come hungry, bring your sense of humor, and prepare to leave with a full stomach, a happy heart, and the lingering smell of seafood on your fingers...

There are many kids fun play facilities onsite for families.
For the people purely coming for the seafood buffet, to be honest, I had expected a bit more before I walked into the restaurant.
Total 7 courses. I love the first 3 courses, bread, mussels and braai Snoek, especially mussels, clean and tasty, super!
Then the 4th and 5th course, seafood mix pot and Potije course, which are dishes that most of customers are desiring to taste, are not in good standard. The food in the pot has been so cooked away, besides prawns and a few pieces of calamari, all types of fishes were mixed and cooked into little pieces you couldn't know what it is anymore. The look and taste both are disappointing. The seafood materials should be rather cooked separately to let customers to enjoy. The same story for the Potije course, meat are cooked like pulled beef.
The salads with the main course are so general. I have enjoyed so many tasty Afrikaans salad meals. I am not satisfied with basic green salad only.
The last course coffee and koeksister. If you are a coffee lovers, rather drink the tea. I haven't tasted such bad taste coffee for years. It must be a very cheap instant coffee, like Frisco.
At last, for the price of R290 per person, I think there are lots improvement. I won't be coming back to have another meal for long, not like this.
By the way, it is really cold at night. Bring your warm jacket and warm shoes. Don't go bare foot just beacuse of...

The place itself is the sort of place that would be featured in a movie, an open beach hut seating area situated on a beach with seating for more than 500 people at full capacity and enough buffet areas to cover for the different dishes and enough space for all people. Not to mention that people often walk around barefoot because of the fact it is all situated on a beach, a truly unique experience unlike anything I have ever seen before. Be prepared to spend a few hours here, this is the furthest from your usual buffet that you will ever experience for all the right reasons.
The owner, Nicky, keeps the operation running like a well oiled machine, from coordinating the buffet rounds with the chefs to doing amusing open and closing speeches with small speeches in between, giving people 5 minute warnings before the next buffet round and announcing when the next round of food is coming out, the overall atmosphere of the place is like nothing I've ever experienced.
The food is to die for, the best seafood I have ever eaten between the several buffet rounds, everything tasting freshly caught from the sea and cooked to perfection.
At R350 per person for the main buffet, it is very well priced for the whole experience and the drinks are not...
