My partner and I went to Rusty Hook tonight 07/06/2025 for the first time and unfortunately it has left a bitter taste in our mouths, literally. There were 4 people seated in the booths and 2 at the bar and for a Saturday night we thought that was odd but the waitress said the band plays from 19:30 to 01:00 and then it gets busy. Upon being seated we had to first ask for the table to be cleaned as it was sticky from a previous use. We ordered drinks first, a choc milkshake and a coke. When the coke arrived it was the small R9 bottle and the milkshake in a beer glass which we both again thought was odd. We ordered the crumbed mushrooms for starters that was tasteless, had to practically drown them in salt just for some taste. The salt shakers itself, was a plastic container with a red lid that someone had made holes in, not a normal salt shaker, tomato sauce decanted into a sweet chili bottle. When we ordered our mains, we were told the fillet was sold out and they only had rump, so we ordered the rump and chicken schnitzel. The rump, that was a thin cut was under cooked and tasted like old meat, the schnitzel, although it looked good, tasted like it had been cooked in old oil. We asked for the cheque and was horrified to see the R9 bottle coke was charged at R25, yes, everyone needs to make a profit but that's a tad rough. When we questioned the waitress regarding the state of the restaurant (dirty, bathroom doors broken, hand dryer broken, no toilet paper or paper to dry your hands) she informed us that the place was being auctioned on Tuesday. We left there around 20:30, still no band and utterly disappointed, not what we...

My experience at Rusty Hook for Mother's Day was an absolute disappointment from start to finish. Despite having made a reservation, the lack of service was glaring as we had to hunt for someone to seat us. Upon being seated, we were greeted with a buffet setup that was woefully depleted, with remnants of food left. There was no indication of a time cutoff for food replenishment, leaving us stranded with meager options.
When my husband approached the manager for assistance, the response was lukewarm at best, with a dismissive promise to 'see what could be done.' Eventually, realizing the futility of staying, we decided to leave, as there was hardly anything edible left.
Even upon our departure, the indifference persisted, with the waitress and manager's inquiries about our satisfaction feeling hollow. The manager's excuse of being understaffed and overwhelmed furthered our frustration.
It's baffling how a restaurant could advertise a special Mother's Day lunch and fail so spectacularly to deliver. Charging exorbitant prices for such a lackluster experience is downright insulting. If they cannot adequately cater to the demand, they should either scale down their offerings or clearly communicate any limitations to their customers.
In summary, my visit to Rusty Hook for Mother's Day was nothing short of a disaster. Save yourself the trouble and avoid this establishment...
