Skilpadvlei restaurant — Restaurant in Stellenbosch Local Municipality

As as family, we spent my birthday lunch at Skilpadvlei Restaurant - but what a disaster. We arrived at 12.30. Firstly, booked a table for 12 adults and 2 toddlers. Table was prepared for 10 people. We added another table on our own - no help as the place was very full. We waited for more than half an hour before being served drinks. Another half an hour later, our food order was taken - and written on a paper serviette - order had to be repeated 3 times before our waiter got it right. Food finally arrived at around 14h25 In the interim, I had phoned into the restaurant asking for service. The lady from the wine tasting division came to help us to find out what the problem was. Waiter was missing in action. We also had to call someone to get more drinks orders - am still waiting for the ice I ordered. Finally at 14h52pm, a waiter arrives and tells us the kitchen is closing at 3pm - but our food order was never taken. After a discussion, we place the order - again written on a serviette. Food finally arrived at around 15h46. Orders were then placed for dessert The last of the dessert was some milk tart slices - still RAW! Taking into consideration we arrived at 12h30 and paid the bill at 17h21 shows what type of service we received - and it was non existent. Then to top it all, I need to pay for the waitron R596.10 for bad service - I don't mind paying for good service, but then it must be earned. My opinion is the restaurant was not capable of coping with a "full-house", the waitrons don't care about service as they are guaranteed of their 10%, and the customer is just an income for the restaurant. In my opinion the only thing saving this restaurant is the view! Went for breakfast with my mother and sister, hostess was nice-ish and said we could sit anywhere. We wanted to sit outside and there were 2 open tables, the first was so dirty we decided to sit at the bigger table. Waiter took his own time to bring 3 glasses of champagne, i also ordered a Hazelnut Iced Coffee. We eventually placed our food order when the waiter decided to grace us with his presence. I ordered a Skilpadie Breakfast and asked for a chicken skilpadie option instead of liver.... I got liver and couldn't eat it! the Hazelnut Iced Coffee arrived with the breakfast and was disgusting! crushed Hazelnuts and Frozen Water no flavor at all. My slice of toast which was included with the breakfast was brought to the table when i finished the rest of the food. I then asked the waiter to return the Hazelnut Coffee and to please remove it from the bill as its really not tasty, He told me i had to drink it while it was frozen still! I then proceeded to tell him that if he were around he would have noticed that i had done so and that I couldn't return it until he came to the table again. Good Day On 31/05/2025 i went to Skilpadvlei in the morning around 10h15 for breakfast, i got there the guy told me breakfast ends at 11h30 but he said they only ONLY doing bookings on Saturday and Sunday, i asked him several times he kept on saying “yes on Saturday and Sunday WE ONLY DOING bookings but you can sit, that first turned me off because iam always there every 2 weeks i come there so it pissed me off because he was lying i think he was just not interested to serve us because the place was full, so he wanted me to leave if he says we only doing bookings on Saturday and Sunday, fine we sat down with menus, more than 20 minutes no one took our orders we ended up deciding to leave, we got them by the entrance told them we leaving cos no one is attending us they just looked at us not even one word maybe to say no Guys we apologise its full but pls sit we will serve you, I was so not happy about that because the way i love that place, i always come there and chill especially in the evening cos its very calming and the closing time is 21h00, I’ve introduced a lot of friends to your place because Food is nice, wine is good, environment is good, But this day eish i was really not...
