La Tronera was the most expensive hotel of our two week trip through northern Portugal and Spain, and it was a long way from the best. It is really a restaurant with rooms; ours was cramped and poorly furnished, with a dimly-lit bathroom. The bed was not particularly comfortable, the WiFi was weak, and altogether, the hotel part of the deal did not match the high price tag – this is rural Spain, after all. In the restaurant, the owner/chef is clearly more at home: he offers a Menu Degustación, very decent value at 30€ including a good bottle of a young Bierzo red wine. The following night we ate a la carte: my wife’s bacalao with Bierzo peppers was ordinary, my slow-cooked baby lamb was reheated and dry. One starter, two main courses, wine and water came to 65€. We had been waiting to try La Tronera ever since it was highly recommended by some local people a couple of years ago now, and it did not live up to our expectations. Which is a shame, because the owner and his wife are welcoming and helpful – perhaps it was just one of...

Read moreESPECTACULAR.!!!! Felicidades equipo....
