Cycling through the Basque country, we had to cut our daily distance because it was raining every day. So instead to cycling all the way to Bilbao, we ended up in Escalante, a gorgeous quaint village. The rooms in Posada Los Gallos are almost new or very recently renovated. The place only has 4 rooms, so do not expect a receptionist to be there at all times. Just ask in the adjoining restaurant/pub and they will call and retrieve a receptionist reasonably quickly. The pace here is slow, which after a while one starts to appreciate. Breakfast was ready at a little after 9 am and was nice. What sets this place apart is the lovely staff. If you know just a tiny bit of Spanish, they warm up very rapidly. Our bicycles were parked overnight in their restaurant storage room, which also contained the e-bike of the cook, who at the time of our checking out made sure he came out as well to show his bike to us (ours are also e-bikes) together with his scar of his heart operation. The offer to lock our bikes here was also extended for the night after we had to move to a different location after we had neglected to re-book before Los Gallos was full. ||||We spent a total of 3 days in Los Gallos and did not tire the least of exploring the surrounding country side, beaches and towns. In a way I feel grateful for the rain that forced us to...

Read moreWhen we arrived at the hotel in Escalante there was noone in reception. It took over half an hour to find someone to attend to us. The barman singularly refused to acknowledge my presence. Eventually we got checked in and the room was very nice and clean. aunfortunately there was a fiesta in town and the noise was intolerable and went on till after 3.00 am, resulting in no sleep for 2 nights after which we left for a more quiet town.||The restauranr boasted an extensive menu, but unfortunately they only had a few items available. Bar staff ignorant, food poor, reception poor. All in all a very...
