I had this restaurant strongly recommended to me and maybe built up a little too much. Yes the premises are very nice, yes the staff are attentive without being intrusive but flexibility and understanding were very poor. 2 of our party were meat eaters but my wife and I, are both vegan The food for the meat eaters was good without being fantastic, but for vegetarians choices were very limited and for vegans virtually zero. When we asked the waiter, a young lad, if we could adapt any of the meals, he had no concept of what veganism was, and when we said no meat, fish or dairy he asked us how we lived! We managed to come up with dishes from the menu that could exclude animal products. The delicious and tomato soup, that I can strongly recommend, came with cream, but luckily in a separate little jug. The salad with a no mayonnaise request, came with a creamy dressing that more by good luck than planning, was contained in a small section of the salad and could be moved to a side plate. The additional vegetables were plentiful but bland. The lovely hot cherries managed to come without the ice cream which was good and the delicious strudel came without the ice cream but a huge dollop of squirty cream. The food for the others was okay. Now I accept that catering for all tastes can be tricky, but in this day and age to have 3 Vegetarian options all with dairy products and zero vegan is, in my opinion a poor do. Whether it was communication problems from us to waiting staff or them to kitchen I do not know, but needs addressing. This could be a fabulous restaurant for all tastes with a bit of flexibility and...
Read moreBooked for my birthday in December. ( Last year it was booked out!) Shocked to discover this year was our table for two was the only booking made all evening. It felt like we were dining on the Marie Celests! Excellent service from two staff on duty. ( one for each of us!) My birthday was duly honoured, but we felt very uncomfortable eating in an empty restaurant. In the old days it was always packed out! I also found it rather chilly, but I don't suppose we two warranted turning up the heating just for two of us. I really don't know what's happened to the Portico Mar, but something is terribly wrong as it is nothing like if used to be over the past 17 years.Another friend tells me her party were the only booking at lunchtime in an otherwise empty restaurant. Word has obviously gone around, and even their regular customers are going elsewhere. It's all so terribly sad. 😓😓 Someone else told me it's due to new management................. so please sort...
Read moreI went on August 17th 2019 to celebrate my birthday with my family and I never enjoyed it . My usual visits we have really enjoyed the food and the venue. My spring roll starter was over cooked and hard . My main course of a chicken fillet was over cooked and I couldn’t eat it . No one came to us and asked if everything was ok . I finally caught a waitresses attention and to tell I cannot eat the chicken as it was over cooked. She asked if I wanted another one , I refused as my guests had finished their meals . Then Happy Birthday was played and a plate was put in front of me with Happy Birthday written on the plate . This plate is what my wife ordered , I ordered a cheese plate . So all in all I was very disappointed with my birthday celebrations at your restaurant. All the other times I have been to your restaurant were first class . When I paid the bill there was not a reduction for the food I could not eat .. I took photos...
