UPDATE: PLEASE READ THE LOW 1 AND 2 STAR REVIEWS FOR THIS ESTABLISHMENT PRIOR TO VISITING! THIS WOULD HAVE SAVED US TIME & MONEY.
Despite the 5 star service provided by Frank (the reason I’m giving 2 stars - now 1 star thanks to the establishment's response), the paella was not very good at all. In fact, both my wife and I got horribly sick within an hour or so after eating. I only ate a small portion because I didn’t care for it, but my wife ate most of hers and she was sick to the point that I thought I’d have to take her to the hospital. It was over 3 hours of emptying her stomach followed by hot and cold spells that left her feeling dizzy and weak. She’s a Nurse Practitioner and recognized it was due to bad food and not the glass and half of wine she consumed. I personally thought the Paella was prepared and delivered to us almost too quickly. The two shrimp that were on my plate leaked unpleasant looking juices when I went to separate the head and I’m grateful I ate so little. It’s the next morning and she’s recovering but still not feeling 100%. I didn’t get nearly as sick but that’s because I took almost everything to go as you’ll see by the pictures. Not ideal for our first night and dinner in Barcelona.

By far, this is the most ridiculous response I've ever seen by an Owner or business. Instead of simply acknowledging the experience we had at your establishment, you choose to attack your patrons when you receive feedback you don't like. THIS IS EVIDENT IN ALL OF YOUR RESPONSES. You deflect blame by telling us we must have gotten sick elsewhere or it's because of the wine we drank (we only ordered 1 bottle and had less than 2 glasses each) or I don't know enough about paella or maybe it's the coffee or worse of all, because our hands are not clean.
As I said, I appreciated Frank's service and after spending almost $100 who cares about the picture I took of your plant? I NEVER said it was delicious, but I PAID for it and I'm free to take it to go if I want to. It ended up in the garbage anyway. My wife did eat most of it which is why she was sick for over 3 HOURS. I didn't criticize the service or the interior of your restaurant, I spoke specifically about the food. It's not hard to eat "ALL THE SHRIMP" as you state since there were only two on the plate.
FYI - there is no test for food poisoning. If we had gone to the hospital, she would have been diagnosed with gastroenteritis which other guests have reported in their reviews after visiting your restaurant. Fortunately we did not have to go the hospital, but if we had, you would be dealing with much more than a poor review.
You're welcome for the video because if I had not posted it, you would have accused me of never being to your restaurant. LOOKS ARE DECEIVING, JUST LIKE YOUR GOOGLE RATINGS!!! My STATEMENTS, not...
Read moreOur dining experience at Restaurant Casa Varela 1986 was a delightful journey through the flavors of Spain, coupled with exceptional service that left a lasting impression.
The Beef with Potato was a savory masterpiece for us, though a bit too raw for our children's taste buds. However, the chef, fueled by passion and warmth, promptly remedied the situation by recooking the dish to perfection, ensuring a pleasant experience for the entire family.
The Spanish Seafood Rice was a symphony of sea-inspired delights, with each bite transporting us to the shores of the Mediterranean. The balance of flavors and textures showcased the culinary expertise that defines this establishment.
The Fried Meatball and Jamón Ibérico were crispy revelation, offering a delightful contrast to the richness of the other dishes. Each bite was a testament to the chef's commitment to delivering authentic Spanish cuisine.
What truly set this dining experience apart was the chef's genuine passion for their craft. The personalized attention, especially when addressing our children's preferences, reflected not just culinary skill but a deep commitment to customer satisfaction. The recooked beef, delivered with a smile, demonstrated a level of care and consideration that elevated our overall enjoyment. Pity that we are too full, otherwise we must try their cake and dessert. In addition to the delectable dishes, the attentive service from the staff further enhanced our evening. Their knowledge of the menu and willingness to accommodate dietary preferences added to the sense of comfort and hospitality.

Read moreOn my most recent trip to Barcelona, Casa Varela emerged as the most remarkable discovery. This is a restaurant that understands refinement not only in cuisine but also in the details of service and setting. Proper cotton tablecloths, high-quality flatware, fine glassware, and porcelain plates—details that too many establishments neglect today in favor of disposable shortcuts. From the very beginning, the atmosphere reflected elegance without pretension.
The wine list is exceptional, carefully curated with depth, breadth, and balance. We enjoyed two superb selections: Pagos de Anguix and Raza by Carmelo Rodero, both served at the perfect temperature and in stemware worthy of their quality.
As for the cuisine, every dish displayed technique, creativity, and respect for the product:
Smoked eel rice with morels — refined, aromatic, and perfectly executed.
Galician razor clams with kimchi aioli, gratinated — a surprising and brilliant interplay of flavors, marrying the Atlantic with Asian nuance.
Red tuna tartare with guacamole and passion fruit — balanced between freshness, acidity, and texture.
Coca bread with tomato and Picual olive oil — simple yet elevated by the choice of exceptional oil.
Andalusian-style calamari with soy-lime mayonnaise — crisp, light, and addictive.
Cheese platter for dessert — a fitting close, showcasing the breadth of Spanish artisanal cheeses.
The service was attentive and precise, striking the balance between professionalism and warmth that defines true...
