Random stop while driving from Bilbao to the Algarve. Over the years we have stopped at some horrors on the same road.||So what a joy the Cuarto Calzados proved to be.||Place was heaving on a Tuesday lunch. Seemed a mixture of locals and drivers.||Both chose from the Menu of the Day. My starter of pasta with three cheeses was tasty and the pasta well cooked.||But my main of cod with, what I can only describe as Bavarian potatoes, was delicious. Cod is often a dish to avoid on the Algarve - full of bones. This Spanish version was beautifully poached and the potatoes were waxy, thinly sliced and sloppy. ||My wife guessed at her mains and it proved to be rabbit. Luckily we eat rabbit a lot so no problem and it was nice.||If you find yourself on the Bilbao to Seville motorway and are near Salamanca and fancy a good meal this is highly recommended at the total price for two including a litre of ice cold water and coffee...
Read moreThis place is located near Salamanca, but the reason I stayed there was because of its proximity to the burial place of St. Teresa de Avila, which is located 10 kms away in Alba de Tormes. Her sarcophagus is in the convent church where she died, along with an amazing museum of Catholic art and liturgical pieces. A church dedicated to her fellow mystic, John of the Cross is also located next to the convent, as is a museum with his tomb. The hotel is very clean, with a comfortable bed and great wi-fi. The tv was useless, with only a few Spanish channels. And no A/C so the room was a bit warm. A nice bath tub and shower. Very reasonable for 30 euros. Martinamor is really just a small village near the highway. There is a very good...
