We arrived in Pola De Somiedo on a Saturday afternoon in mid-June, and hadn't pre-booked accommodation. Little did we know that the small town was hosting a road cycling event and a film making one too ! Going into the hotel we were warmly greeted by the young lady on reception, who spoke excellent english. She explained that the hotel had no rooms for that night but that there was one room at the nearby (2 minute walk) Casa Mino, which was owned by the family. This was in the village square. Arriving at the Casa Mino we were shown a room in the modern accommodation at the rear so it was quiet. The room was comfortably furnished and was spacious, had a good bathroom and was very clean. Meals were available in the Casa Mino which is a lively village meeting place with bar, outside tables and indoor seating. The owner was very friendly, as were the staff. We stayed for two nights and really enjoyed the experience of an authentic Asturian village Casa. Accommodation included a simple breakfast, and the choice of food in the bar was good, traditional and substantial. ||||There are many excellent walks in the area, and the lady in the tourist office adjacent to the Casa helpfully marked up our maps giving locations, distance and walking times, plus weather forecast too.||||Even though we arrived during a cycling event there was no problem finding parking in the town centre.||||We enjoyed our stay in Pola de Somiedo and consider ourselves lucky to have found such nice and authentic accommodation. Given that the town has a busy program of events it might be best to pre-book.||||Any negatives? Yes, we didn't see a bear, but had some good vulture sightings whilst on the walk to the Lagos...

Read moreWe booked a standard double room by directly contacting the hotel via WhatsApp (as instructed on their website). We were told that the price included breakfast (N.B. plans with breakfast are not offered on third party travel agents).
However, when we arrived and after we paid, we were told that the restaurant was closed, and we were given four packs of sweet bread as our breakfast. We were also shown the coffee machine. This can hardly be considered a proper "breakfast". Had we been told at the time of booking that this is what we would get, we would have definitely booked via third party travel sites which provides far more protection in case something goes wrong.
The room was not properly cleaned. The cup and towel used by the previous guest was still in the bathroom. We were curious as to why the room smelt like bananas when we first arrived only to discover that the banana peel from the previous guest was still in the trash can. This made us question whether the sheets were...
