Can Sueño — Restaurant in Tàrbena

We visited this place on late September 2018, on a beautiful autumn sunny day. We had heard about this place from our friends that were here before, few years ago. So, we had some expectation, but the big surprise was to yet come…

We had let the noisy cities behind us, we had lost the phone signal and we reached the top of the mountain, right in the middle of wild nature, very close to Heaven. A peaceful atmosphere welcomed us when we got down from our cars, than the beauty of the landscape and finally the warm smile of our hosts.

After the welcome greeting, some sensational cocktails occurred. I am not such a big fan of those drinks, but I couldn’t help but taste a little bit from each one. And I couldn’t have been stopped drinking but I had to drive back to our accommodation. So, a piece of advice: try to find a way to reach Can Sueño without driving…

Having the taste of cocktails still strong on my tongue I started to explore the place and took some photos for my trip album. The preparations for setting up the table were on progress. Everything was set to it’s place with an annoying precision. I shot hundreds of frames and every time I had a strange feeling that there were more, new, exciting thing to have into my camera.

And at 2PM sharp, all the guest were invited to hear the true story of their dream, told by the hostess. I don’t want to reveal it here, because I would definitely ruin the all magic. All I can say is that everything there has a connection: the way that they discovered the place, the sources of inspiration for their recipes and last but not least the joy of sharing their dream.

The dishes ware quite sensational. The plating was outstanding and the taste was divine. And, as I said before, every dish had its own story and it’s source of inspiration… The goat cheese, marzipan and lavender jelly with figs and grapes ware completed by a smoke of aromatic herbs. It was the steam that is rising from the hot tiles and rocks during an autumn shower after a very dry season, there in the middle of the dreamland!

Suddenly I had a revelation: I wasn’t in a normal restaurant having a regular food; I was in the middle of a dream (their dream), I became part of it and I was feeling special.

In conclusion, I would like to clarify one more thing: this is not a proper restaurant, it is a place where you want to be, to live and to became, for a few hours a part of it. The food is not regular, it is something very close to art and our hosts are not simple cooks, they are much more, they are artists, living and sharing their dream came true.

Ya hace un tiempo que leí un articulo relacionado con este restaurante en un periódico local, "Restaurante ilegal en Tárbena". Aunque ya estoy jubilado, aún me tira la profesión y decidí hacer un pequeño trabajo de investigación a nivel personal. ya que tengo casa por la zona, no me suponía gran esfuerzo. Movido por la profunda curiosidad que me despertó este articulo, en el cual mencionaba que el restaurante era ilegal desde sus inicios. Como puede ser que un restaurante lleve tantos años sin controles? ningún inspector de sanidad? trabajo? ni organismos locales? como podía ser? Me decidí y entre en su pagina web para realizar una reserva.

Tuve que definir ese día si quería comer pescado o carne, dado que todo el menú era cárnico me decante por el pescado, y me informaron que el horario de inició de dicho "banquete" era 13-14h.

Llegó el gran día. Nos costó un poco llegar, que estaba mal señalizado. llegamos al lugar, donde tenia unas vistas increíbles del valle. Me impactó gratamente. La bienvenida acogedora aunque demasiado cercana para mi gusto. La explicación del menú fue larga y un poco fantasiosa, pero que restaurador no peca un poco de ello. Ah, y por suerte pudimos entenderla ya que todos eramos ingleses. El menú fue francamente ridículo, carente de concepto y poco realista. No quiero entrar en la ejecución de los platos, cada uno tiene su gusto y te puede parecer mas o menos bueno. Pero si me parece interesante destacar como se fragua la gran estafa, que los jabalíes los cazan ellos?! Que el producto es biológico y todo de huerta? Que tienen galardonada gastronomía? Por quien? Y que el Sumiller es un gran experto en vinos? Permitirme que lo dude...

Si cazaran los jabalíes, claramente seria una infracción a la ley, no se puede creer que hagan eso en realidad, donde están los inspectores de sanidad cuando pasan estas cosas, claramente ponen en riesgo la salud de sus clientes.

Producto biológico de su jardín?, ese que tienen descuidado con malas hierbas. Como puede ser producto de la huerta fuera de temporada? bastante dudoso, nos hubiera gustado pasear por esa huerta ya que estuvimos tantas horas allí.

Por otro lado, se venden como si hubiesen ganado premios, cuando ni siquiera creo que haya pasado una inspección de sanidad. Si, todo se ve muy bonito. Si no supiera que este sitio fue edificado de forma ilegal y que esta gente montó una estafa para extranjeros incautos y españoles hábidos de menús exóticos y aventuras gastronómicas.

Y lo de aquel señor intentando parecer un sumiller fue mas que gracioso, a los jubilados parecía gustare aquella especie de danza ridícula a la hora de realizar la seuda explicación fue de lo mas cómico y triste a la vez para los amantes del vino.

En conclusión, un menú del día, a la altura de cualquier bar de Alicante. Pero con vajilla inglesa, servicio cercano, pero sin profesionalidad. Lujo, pero sin agua potable. Reconocido, pero sin licencia. Reitero, si no supiera lo que sé, hubiera salido de aquí pensando que la comida no era de lo mejor pero el sitio y la experiencia era interesante.

Espero que mi humilde opinión sirva para que aprendamos a ser mas críticos y no cegarnos con el lujo, es absurdo...

This is not just a restaurant, it is a dining experience. You feel like your favorite friends invited you to their house to visit and have supper.At Con Sueno you are treated like a warm friend. Every part of it is amazing! First the drive up the mountain, then the charming home, the first cocktail is delicious and beautiful. I love how everyone is welcomed up to eat,and the menu is reviewed and explained. The meals are carefully thought out and seasonally inspired.the ingredients are fresh and locally sourced.
