I'm quite a regular at the Can Pou as my family live in Vidreres and this is just about its only hotel although a restaurant with rooms would be a more exact description. It is hard to evaluate because it really has no pretensions and in that it rather mirrors the small town of Vidreres. Despite its location about 10 miles from the coast at Lloret no one should see this as a conventional holiday stopover; rather it serves best as a very economical location for overnight travellers [it's not too far from the motorway and Girona airport] or those like me who have either a personal or commercial reason for visiting the town.||||It is cheap. I paid 25 euros a night on this most recent stay and for that I got a spartan but effective and clean room. They recently upgraded the bath/shower facilities which was a necessary step as in the past experiences with the plumbing have become the stuff of family folklore. Now things are civilized and reliable. There is a modern tv but restricted to local channels and the rooms are quite spacious. The restaurant is well-regarded locally for its take on Catalan food and gets very busy at weekends. The cooking can impinge on the room especially at weekends and in the summer.||||The rooms are kept clean with towels and linen replaced regularly. The building provides access to the pedestrianised heart of Vidreres, a small town with a slightly dated feel but also new housing and commercial developments. The hotel has its own parking.||||I like the Can Pou because it doesn't try to be what it isn't. Providing you know what you are getting it is a cheap, clean and useful stopover and on that basis I would have no problem offering a qualified recommendation especially as I expect to continue using it as long as the family live...
Read moreI'd been travelling through Spain for 5 weeks and staying at predominantly tourist type accommodation. I was looking for something with a bit more of a local flavour, close to PGA Catalunya and with good food close by. This fitted all my criteria with the bonus of it being very reasonably priced, (about £26 per night) and the restaurant being on site. The room I was given was on the 2nd floor at the top of the staircase and was very large with a newly renovated bathroom. The bathroom doesn't have a bath, but does have a very large shower cubicle with the shower head supplying good water pressure and is very well decorated in a modern, neutral colour scheme. The windows opened onto a small, solid, flat roof that was only accessible from here and was ideal for sitting on in the afternoon and reading, while also being able to see over the rooftops of this part of town. You will not find air-conditioning units here, but the windows can be left open with the shutters down at night to get air circulation. The hotel has a car park next door that is shared with the adjoining small supermarket and there is more secure parking available across the street from this property that is available for a small charge. This was a good base for me as it was close to the golf, close to major roads with access to Barcelona in one direction and Girona/France in the other, while also only being a short drive to the coastal resorts. Added to this, the food in the restaurant was very good, although not priced for the extremely budget conscious. This is not a modern, high tech establishment but a small oasis of Catalan hospitality and cuisine that I would recommend...
Read moreA family run hotel and restaurant for generations, it really is a hidden treasure, just over the border of la Jonquera from France, a fabulous over night stop on our trip down to southern Spain, we were welcomed like members of the family, the food is absolutely exquisite, the service is fantastic, a beautiful terrace to enjoy in the summer months and a traditional restaurant inside as the seasons change, but don't expected ultra modern, if that's what you are looking for this is not for you, but if you are looking for a true Catalonian experience then you will feel at home, the rooms are enormous for the price, spotlessly clean, incredibly confortable beds, modernised bathrooms Italian style showers, and everything from soap to shampoo to shower gel! Wonderfully soft towels, wifi, tv, and so very peaceful, the secure undercover parking was a huge plus for us. And we stayed both on our trip down to Southern Spain, and on our return to France, having grown up in Spain it was very much like visiting family, don't forget to look at the photos in the restaurant, yes that is frank Sinatra with the current owners grand father in 1950! Oh the history and the stories those walls hold! The price point is more than reasonable (cost of meal is separate) but most definitely worth eating there, their chef is a magician ! The waitress was always smiling and very polite! An asset to the business. And the wife and husband team work so so hard, if really is admirable! We look forward to coming back for years to come. The last week of august is the local fiestas, so if that's something your interested in, book in advance! An all round wonderful place...
