Moon River Sea Food Restaurant Cabana — Restaurant in Southern Province

During our trip along the south coast of Sri Lanka’s we stopped accidentally in Unakuruwa and at once fell in love with this place. Small bay, surrounded by sleepy fisherman village, good place for swimming and snorkeling, a couple of resorts and few tourists mostly practicing surfing, hidden surrounding bays, where you get by secret paths – altogether create a special vibe of calm, peacefulness, relaxation and being in the middle of nature and village life. Moon River Restaurant & Cabanas is like a crown of it. If you look for a posh place, go somewhere else – there is nothing of the kind. The restaurant and cabanas behind are simple, surrounded with evergreens and with a touch of hippy style. But the food is good, fish always fresh and tasty, the prices are friendly – the value you get exceeds money you pay. The staff is very friendly and laid-back, after a day or two you start to feel like living in a friendly commune. We wanted just have a look at a bay but stayed there for 3 nights and left the place...

From the beginning of our experience with The Moon River restaurant we feel the awesome hospitality and kindness of the owner - he came for us with his car for free to Tangalle and even drop us home near to Tangalle (it was quite late). The food was really tasty, fresh seafood and a big portion. For four of us we have 2 portions of prawns (devilled and a grilled one), grilled calamari and also a seafood kottu. We were all full. The seafood kottu was the best of we had been tasting at Sri Lanka. The grilled calamari was made with curry sause, and the calamari wasn't gummy. It was perfect. The drinks were also good - big size and a lot of alcohol ;). This place has also a perfect location - you can enjoy your meal looking at the ocean and nearby fishermans preparing for the hunt - its really worth to see. mal is such a lovely and helpful cook anf owner of the restaurant. He cooks with passion and love. He always has fresh ingredients and even if something is not there, he grabs his scooter and gets it for you. Even things like fries. are made freshly after you ordered them. We enjoyed his food so much that we were there everyday (7days in a row). You could even preorder special things like lobster and he had it available the day after :) His location is directly at the beach and very comfy. He‘s looking after his customers also on a personal base(e.g. organized a doctor for one of our friends) He‘s also always looking what to do better, e.g. extending his bar, renovating the floor,… to have the best for the customers.
