Wow! Amazing stay at Guesthouse Alpina in Fanas, in the canton of Graubunden, Switzerland. Exactly what i was looking for - a short break in the mountains where i could be immersed in nature and soak up some proper fresh air. I spent most of my stay around Fanas village, as didn't feel the need to travel far (although i noticed good transport links to local villages, ski slopes and bigger resorts).||||Mountain views from the guesthouse balcony and bedrooms are stunning, each day the same view of the Prattigau Valley looks different as the light alters; i experienced some of the most vivid sunsets in my life!!! Surrounding countryside changes around this time of year; flowers sprout up, grass appears where snow melts. Its a feast to the senses, all sorts of aromas present themselves, cut grass, farmyard, firewood....||||Many hiking opportunities on Alpina's doorstep. Big contrast between green farming countryside lower down the mountain, and the deep snow further up, accessable by cable car right next to Alpina. Up top its really peaceful, a paragliders paradise. Didn't try paragling but apparently it's possible to have a go. The mountain opposite the guesthouse has skiing slopes which I explored, and there is ground for tobogganing, snowshoeing and cross country-skiing.||||Verena, Shibu and Valerie, were welcoming and created a warm atmosphere. Cosy bedrooms with nice Swiss details, real tree trunk bedside tables, and lavender from the garden. Menu of traditional Swiss and Indian food, very high quality, delicious, and presented well. They have a real genuine love of food, and healthy eating. Highlights include Swiss Capun, a traditional dish that tasted fantastic.||||I was travelling alone and it worked well. It would also be great for quiet romantic break, snowy adventure sports break or a quiet health retreat as they also offer...

Read moreI had the pleasure of volunteering at the Guesthouse for 2 weeks in September this year, and it was an incredible experience. Earlier in my trip, I had been backpacking through Spain and Italy, and I reached a point where I desperately needed to escape the large cities with so many other tourists. Fanas and the Guesthouse offered the perfect opportunity for me to do just that. I was given an adorable single room that was decorated very nicely. The owners––Shibu, Varina, and Valerie––are incredibly caring and welcoming. They took the time to chat with me and share experiences, and advise me on the best hiking trails and sights to see. Shibu is an incredible cook! I will greatly miss his Indian food :) ||||Overall, I found the solitude and beauty in the Fanas and surrounding areas that I was seeking. The Guesthouse offers pristine views of the mountains. I spent so much time just sitting to watch the sunsets or stargaze at night, and soaking it all up. It was a great two weeks in which I had the time to read and write again, and to appreciate nature and find joy in a simple life. Fanas is not the place to come if you are looking for a bustling area with lots of shops and shows, etc. But it is just the place to be if you are looking for a peaceful and quiet place to get away from all the noise and find pleasure in the small...
