This place was an incredible experience for us. On our way up to Lauterbrunnen we were stopped by police becuase of a running race. Instead of turning around we asked them what's up that side road and they said go have a look. Wow, a nice drive up to a small village with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains with nice homes perched on the mountain side overlooking the valleys below. We had a quick coffee at the Cafe there and the guy told us about the small gondola uo to the top of the mountain where we could see where the cows go in the summer time. A few bucks later we were on our way up the mountain. When we got to the top there was a great little eatery at the gondola landing site. We sat there and had a small platter of local cheeses and other bits and pieces while we looked over probably the most beautiful views we had ever seen, with Lauterbrunnen well below us. After a quick eat we walked around the farm lands along some tracks to open uo the views ever further. The pictures I have attached are lovely and provide great memories for us, but they, by no means account for the grand vistas and awe you will feel when walking around up here. After later visiting the busy Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald, we decided our trip up this mountain was the highlight of our time in Switzerland. Do yourself a big favour and poke your nose up this road and keep following it until you see...
Read moreBeautiful location with stunning mountain views and conveniently just at the start of all outdoor activities that Sulwald offers and... that's about it when comes to the positives, unfortunately...
We visited today while the place was just slightly busy - when we sat down most of the guests present already had their orders on the tables in front of them. Meanwhile it took the staff 20 minutes to take our order. We even went inside to ask if we could order directly there since we only wanted to grab a quick bite and a drink. We were told that we'll be served at the table. They didn't specify it would take that long... After taking our order it took another 25 minutes to actually receive the food. We ordered 3 simple hot dogs (with one costing a whopping 9chf!!! that's the list expensive I've ever seen in a mountain hut!) and a beer so not necessarily a complicated dish to prepare... BUT! Waitress present was busy serving her friend a free coffee at the table next to ours so I do understand she wouldn't have time to focus on other visitors.
Big shame because it used to be such a simple yet cozy and sweet place to grab a tasty bratwurst off the grill or have a quick Glühwein before heading to the sledding track. Charm is unfortunately...
Read moreWe had an amazing lunch at Sulwald Stübli! I know it may look like a simple sandwich and soup in the pictures. In reality, it was a fresh farm-to-table meal. I think my husband said it best. He said it was the best salami sandwich he has ever had. I know, right?
I decided to go with the soup of the day that comes with mountain cheese and bread. Best decision ever! It was a yellow squash soup with hints of curry. It was fantastic! I'm not sure of the name for this mountain cheese. Is it Sulsalp? All I can say is that it was delicious, and beautifully presented with wild flowers sprinkled on top of the cheese. It was all very satisfying with the freshly made bread. A light & refreshing meal.
We thought about sharing the cheese Fondue, but it was an unseasonably warm day. Another menu item that caught my eye was the Tyrolean Cheese Dumpling. I'd love to try that one day with a salad if we ever make it back to Sulwald.
We also tried their signature ice tea which was herbal in flavor. It tasted refreshing and totally matched the natural scenery & ambiance around us. Our server was also wonderful & friendly. She made us feel welcomed. It truly was a...
