Another last minute find, and a very lucky one at that. Booked last minute whilst touring through Switzerland on our way to lake Geneva. Situated in a very quiet picturesque village up a side road. It was about 8pm and they had one room left situated at the top of the building. Very stylish romantic hotel. Room was very large with sloping vaulted ceilings, not great for those over 6ft though, luckily neither myself or my partner are. The bathroom also had a sloped ceiling and was highly impractical for my partner (5ft 8")who had to duck in the sunken bath whilst taking a shower , however from a woman's perspective it suited me as I like nothing more than a relaxing bath. They squeezed us in for dinner and set us up a romantic table for two in their brasserie as the small restaurant itself was full. We had our waitress who treated us like royalty and totally spoiled us. We both chose the steak with mushroom sauce as our main which was cooked perfectly and very delicious. We each had our own 1/2 bottles of wine, mine a Pommerol and my boyfriend, a Margaux, both were very lovely. I would not normally go for dessert, but the selection sounded to tasty so ended up with the white chocolate mousse which was also delicious. After a very relaxing nights sleep, breakfast was served in the brasserie / bar section of the hotel and consisted of French bread, croissants, jams, cheese, ham and boiled egg, tea / coffee with freshly squeezed orange juice. Just before we left we took a quick look at the grounds and found the hotel was situated in a very picturesque secluded garden with patio seating at the front and hidden in the rear garden. The hotel also sided onto a lovely river at the foot of the mountains and vineyards. It was a shame we had arrived so late in the evening and the weather had not been better as it would have been lovely to have had dinner or breakfast outside. Nothing seemed too much trouble for the staff and would highly recommend, especially for the food in the restaurant and choice of good wine. This is more suited to a couple wanting to eat in the restaurant and...
Read moreMy wife and I wanted to stop in Avenches but one of the restaurants was closed and the second fully booked. We then called the restaurant of hotel de l’Oursin Sugiez , 20 Minutes drive from Avenches where we’ve been some years ago. Fortunately, table for two was available. This was definitely a good choice. The hotel and restaurant are in a very charming spot by the river. The inside is very nice and decorated with good and simple taste, friendly staff, superb cellar and excellent menu. We went for the set menu: cold and warm starters, main course, cheese and desert for 79 chf/pp: certainly not the kind of inflated prices you find in Geneva and nearby locations. The region is producing very good asparagus and spring is the season, so the cold starter was a superb asparagus mousse with Arctic char, warm starter a creamy soup with local herb named : ail de l’ours, kind of chive smelling like garlic, main course was a very tender veal filet with a delicious morel sauce accompanied with green and white asparagus. Great choice of local cheeses, and a strawberry mouse based desert. Everything worth going back. ||Sorry, no picture, my wife complaining: why are you always taking pictures, it can be embarrassing...anyway written comment should entice you to visit, and yes, the wine list is 20 pages long with great choice of Swiss, French, Italian, Spanish and New World Wines. Give it a try, but don’t gamble since the place is not too close from major towns: give them...
Read moreMore a restaurant with rooms than a hotel with a restaurant, the Romantik Hostellerie de l'Ours has a lot going for it: owners with commitment, taste and a natural friendliness; a restaurant offering a light, unfussy cuisine based on fresh, seasonal products and a tasteful decor in evidence throughout the establishment from the matey bar and bistro (a magnet for the locals - also at breakfast time) through to the unstuffy gourmet restaurant and equally unfussy but adequately facilitized bedrooms. And, best of all, you won't faint when you get the bill!!||Although the building has been around for more than a century (deserving the epithet 'Romantk') it was neglected and empty for more than 27 years before the present management took it over. Since then, it has established a positive reputation well beyond the local community boundaries. For this reason, it's best to book in advance: capacity is limited both in the restuarants as well as the bedrooms and it would be a pity to miss the treat. And, our dogs were also made to feel welcome and enjoyed the stay, too. Viator ed...
