This is my first negative restaurant review. I’m writing in English because the locals already know this place is not worth it (foods isn’t great and overpriced, our waiter was terrible) - for prospective visitors who want a meal by the lake, a tip: go to Braui in Mühlehorn instead! After our lunch visit yesterday, I am so happy my husband and I decided against Sagibeiz for our wedding venue.
At first, we were greeted by a wonderful lady who advised us on our seating options. She was so nice and due to wind, sat us on a 6 seater table, which we shared with two other lovely ladies. It was a beautiful day and we were happy to be there.
Then….drumroll….Mr. Doomsday enters the scene….when we noticed a male waiter, who began speaking to the two other women at our table, as he greeted us while standing on their side, with a bark: “Sprechen sie Deutsch?!”…probably because he heard I was speaking in English to my American husband. Why hello Mr. visibly gloomy and distressed waiter, it’s so nice to meet you too. I replied in Swiss-German that I’m happy to translate. I was taken a bit aback but then figured, oh - he just wants to get it out of the way and explain the Tagesmenu to both parties…because, of course, enjoying lunch should be experienced with military service efficiency - if only that theme lasted for the whole meal, it may have turned out better. Mr. Doomsday then proceeds to come by and ask for our drink order (before bringing us a menu…which is overall fine - that’s quite common here). We say sparkling water please. He then follows up, seeming annoyed, and is like “want anything else? What about an apero?” Well…I’m visibly pregnant and my husband doesn’t want to drink alcohol, so we decline. A few moments later, we order our food with him. When someone else comes by to bring our dishes, they announce my dish (which is correct) and then hand the second dish to my husband. He knows he ordered fish, and wondered if this was correct - he inspected it, and it was the meat. I ask if he wants me to say something - he says it’s fine. He already touched it so doesn’t want it to go to waste. The waiter then comes by and barks “but, but…that is not the fish!!!” With a tone and look that insinuates, well of course: this is OUR fault! LOL. Sorry, dude…go do your job and figure it out with the kitchen. Maybe apologize to us and to whoever is getting their food way too late (it was apparent he was stressed out because kitchen was not able to handle even one missed order). We waited for 30 minutes after finishing our main course. My husband was supposed to get a brownie as a part of the exquisite Tagesmenu. We are like screw it, we gotta go. We order the check. We pay, I say thank you, and then underneath his breath the waiter says “Danke für nichts“ LOL…like a doomsday petulant child! He seems like the type of person who blames everyone else for his own problems. Maybe he was upset with me because I speak Swiss-German (I didn’t feel like switching to high-German when I’m only in Switzerland a few times a year). Or he just needs therapy who knows. Not sure if you can train Mr. Doomsday into being nicer, but I highly recommend you...
Read moreOur lunch at Sagibeiz am Walensee was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we arrived, the setting immediately stood out—nestled along the picturesque Walensee, the restaurant offers stunning lake views that perfectly complement a relaxed yet refined dining experience.
Service: The staff was warm, attentive, and professional throughout our visit. Despite the restaurant being moderately busy during lunchtime, we were promptly welcomed and seated at a table with a beautiful view. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu, offering thoughtful recommendations without being intrusive. The pacing of the meal was well-balanced—efficient without feeling rushed.
Food Quality: The menu offers a delightful blend of Swiss and contemporary cuisine, with a clear emphasis on fresh, high-quality ingredients. We began with a seasonal salad, which was crisp, vibrant, and dressed to perfection. For mains, the locally sourced fish was expertly prepared—flaky, flavorful, and accompanied by a delicate herb butter sauce. The presentation was elegant without being overly fussy, allowing the ingredients to shine.
Ambiance: Sagibeiz strikes a harmonious balance between rustic charm and modern sophistication. The lakeside location adds a serene touch, and the thoughtful interior design—natural wood accents and large windows—enhances the dining experience. It’s the kind of place that feels special but still comfortable and welcoming.
Value for Money: Considering the quality of food, the attentive service, and the incredible location, the pricing felt reasonable. Portions were generous, and the entire experience delivered excellent value for a premium lakeside restaurant in Switzerland.
Overall Impression: Sagibeiz am Walensee is a gem that excels in every aspect—ambiance, service, and cuisine. Whether you're looking for a casual yet refined lunch or a memorable special occasion spot, this restaurant delivers. I would gladly return and highly recommend it to anyone visiting the region.
