This is the location of The Schwurplatz (“oath site”) on Lake Lucerne refers to the Rütli meadow (Rütliwiese), a historic clearing on the lake’s shore, near Seelisberg. According to Swiss tradition and legend: In 1291, representatives of the three founding cantons of Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden met there. They swore the Rütlischwur (“Rütli Oath”), pledging mutual support and defense against outside domination, especially Habsburg rule. This oath is seen as the founding moment of the Swiss Confederation. Today: The Rütli is a national memorial site, owned by the Swiss Confederation and protected by the Swiss Federal Charter Association (Schweizerische Gemeinnützige Gesellschaft). Each 1st of August (Swiss National Day), official celebrations are held there. You can reach it by boat from Lucerne, Brunnen, or Flüelen, then a short uphill walk. So the Schwurplatz is not a building, but a symbolic meadow on Lake Lucerne, deeply tied to Swiss national identity.

A wonderful traditional Swiss experience. We took a boat ride from Lucerne and disembarked at Rutli for lunch here. It was a Swiss highlight for us on many levels. The history of Rutli as the spot where Switzerland was originally established in 1291 was great. The Rutlihaus restaurant, located a 10 minute walk on an uphill trail from the Rutli boat dock, honors this historic event.

The barley cream soup was truly fantastic as were the views of Lake Lucerne. Service provided by Mark, was perfect. Their carrot cake was unique, almost like a dense cheesecake with carrotcake spices.

Overall, we loved the 2 hours that we spent in Rutli. Seeing their beautiful hairy cows, just like those in Scotland, was a pleasant surprise too.

Highly...
