Mr. Brown Café — Restaurant in Yuanshan

This is the coffee shop at the Kavalan Distillery in Yilan. King Car Group owns both Kavalan and Mr. Browns. If you visit this place, your there for the Whisky Distillery tour. That is really interesting and includes a sample tasting at the end. Tours are roughly hourly. Most are on Chinese. If you need a different language (English) best to call ahead. The tour takes about 90min signs include English, so one could still get the gist without having Chinese. For an extra NT 600 at end of tour you can have a special "DIY tasting session.". They take you to second floor taking room where you can select four (4) samples of anything they make (including the very top shelf stuff). Definitely worth it if you are a serious connoisseur, or even just interested in learning a bit about the differences in type. It's a bit of a drive to Yilan from Taipei (an on at least 90min if driving and tunnels are clear.). Bit you can make a day trip out of it. The roast chicken in Yilan is famous and very tasty. Grabbed lunch after doing a tour and it was a perfect spot to grab a quick bite before heading out.

Overall the food was good and the portions were generous. A nice and cozy place to have a stroll before heading to the building. On the ground floor there is a shop where you may buy liquor, soft drinks and coffee. Even if you are not interested in whisky, you are amazed by the details of the instruction of each bottle of wine. On the other side you can get some gelato, especially whisky flavor. Down the hall it is the whisky tasting corner. You may taste today's special first and see if you like it. Never miss the cafe on the upper level. Better find a seat near the window.
