I stumbled upon this oasis in the Taiwanese woods, like a mirage after a particularly brutal kite session of battling the wind and waves. Apparently, this place is run by a mythical creature known as Libby, who I can only assume is part mermaid and part superhero. Picture this: you're shivering like a chihuahua in a snowstorm, questioning all your life choices that led you to be soaking wet and borderline frozen. Then BAM! Like an angel with a deep fryer, Libby appears with fried fish so good it made me forget I couldn't feel my toes, and mulled wine that warmed my soul faster than a thousand suns. The location is… well, it’s in the woods. Near a beach. Which is exactly where you want to be if you’ve just been dragged left and right along water in a storm by a kite. But the real kicker? This place has a full-on Mexican vibe going on. Yes, you read that right. In Taiwan. It’s like a cultural mashup that shouldn't work, but totally does. Maybe Libby has a secret portal, who knows? Anyway, I ended up chatting with Libby until late, mostly about kites and how, despite the occasional near-death experience, life can be pretty darn amazing. She's got the kind of cool that makes you want to learn to kitesurf, even though you know you'd probably just end up tangled in the lines. Pros: Libby: Seriously, this woman deserves her own Yelp category. "Saviors of Soggy Kiteboarders." Fried Fish: Life-affirming. Possibly magical. Mulled Wine: Liquid sunshine in a mug. The whole "Mexican bar in the Taiwanese woods" thing: Confusingly awesome. Good vibes and even better company. Cons: Could spend all your money here: The food and drink are that good. You might start questioning why all bars aren't Mexican in the woods near a beach in Taiwan. Verdict: Go. Just go. Even if you don't kitesurf. Just tell Libby a random internet person sent you. Maybe she'll give you extra fish. And if you see a kite flying overhead, wave. It might be me, regretting all my life choices again, but at least knowing there's delicious fried fish waiting for...
Read moreWhat an amazing place! We drove across two counties to have a dip in the ocean and check out this restaurant, and we were not disappointed. We ordered the fish and chips and shrimp and steak quesadilla. Unfortunately for us, we got in line behind a large group and our two young boys were a little bit fussy as we waited for our food. The lady who took our order was super friendly even though she was working by herself. But, in the small, hot, beach-side kitchen, she wasted no time in making the plethora of food that everyone had ordered. The fish and chips were amazing, and coming from the coastal west coast of Canada, I consider myself to have high standards. The quesadilla was equally impressive, it was cheesy with giant shrimp and thinly sliced beef. The included salsa and chipotle sauce tasted fresh and delicious. As an added bonus, they played great music. I will definitely return after I buy a big tent so I can spend more time...
Read morePoor service. It took one hour to receive our food, although the drinks came fast. Presumably so that we would order more.
The layering of the quesadilla and the nachos made no sense. In the former case, too much chicken in one part and practically nothing in other parts. In the latter, the chips on top had no sauce. The chilli and salsa were all hidden underneath.
Since these were shared foods, some people received flavourful food and others almost nothing.
It was like the kitchen staff closed their eyes to...
