On the Rock is a scenic restaurant located on the hillside approximately 40 minutes from Chiang mai's city center. Sitting is available on two levels of which both provide open scenic views of the surrounding country side. Reservations are available only by LINE and the restaurant is open from 4:30pm to 11:30pm Thursday through Sunday.
Previously, reservations may have been required two weeks in advance. However, the restaurant has recently expanded its seating area which may have reduced this period. Regardless, it is strongly recommended you make a reservation, especially if requesting certain seating locations or large groups are involved, before making the trip to the restaurant lest you find the restaurant is full and you have made the trip for not. Guest seating is spread far enough that you don't feel crowded and umbrellas and tents are available on request to shade the diners if they find the sun or heat too intense or it rains.
As for the food, On the Rock provides an array of foods and meats, most of which you grill yourself. The prices are fair and depending on how hungry your party is, 400-500 baht per person can be expected unless alcohol is desired. There is also a 200 baht bottle opening fee for those who desire to bring their own bottles of alcohol. Ordering of food is made on paper slips in which you mark the quantity of each item and then hand to the servers. You are given several slips so if you want additional items these requests can be made anytime. Sometimes servers do need to be flagged down do to the number of guests and the large area of the restaurant.
Conclusion: While the food was good, this diner did not find any particular item that was a "must eat" or special. On the Rock's main attraction is the view, clean air, ambiance, and relaxed atmosphere away from the noise and congestion of the city. If you want to have a feeling of enjoying a BBQ like meal with friends and family while enjoying nature, On the Rock is the...
Read moreI had an extremely disappointing experience at this restaurant. Despite calling multiple times in advance to make a reservation, nobody answered the phone. Consequently, my family and I had to drive a long way up the mountain to reach the restaurant directly. We arrived at 5:30 PM, an hour after they opened at 4:30 PM, to avoid long queues. However, we were shocked to hear that a reservation was required. When I explained that I had called numerous times, they informed me that they only accept reservations through Line, without any mention of this on the Google map profile. It was frustrating and confusing why they would have a phone number listed if they don't answer calls or accept reservations through it. If they had answered the phone and informed us that they were fully booked, we wouldn't have wasted our time driving there. Considering there were no other restaurants nearby, it was particularly distressing because my younger child was starving. The worst part when I tried to make a reservation for tomorrow directly at the counter. The staff insisted that I use Line for reservations, completely disregarding the fact that I am a foreigner and may not be familiar with this specific app. It is unfair to assume that everyone has access to Line or knows how to use it, especially for those visiting or new to the area. As a customer, I expect a more inclusive approach that accommodates different preferences and communication methods. It is essential for the restaurant to provide alternative options for making reservations, especially for individuals who may not have access to or be comfortable using Line. This lack of flexibility and consideration for diverse customers is highly...
Read moreRecommended by my friend to this sunset BBQ spot and thought to come try it out.
🗓️ booking was made through the line app, and they will ask for confirmation a day before so do note in case you don’t use it often
🌅 the sunset view was okay, it was a bright red sun down for us and was rather pretty. That said, it seemed very small in the vast hilly area and didn’t give off that aurora-like sunset as we were anticipating.
🍖 the food was average at best - pork wasn’t great, salmon was flimsy when cooked and scallops too buttery for our liking.. Perhaps should have ordered cooked food and drinks which would make better sense.
🪰 there’s a good amount of houseflies as well, for those who are disturbed by it
🪑 seating are rather important as the second row diners will get bbq air blown right in their face from those seated in the first row..
💰 pricing was acceptable for the experience, at 1000B for 2 pax though I wasn’t eating a whole lot
🚕 do note to order a taxi from the check in counter if you are looking for a way down the hill, at least 30 minutes in advance as our ride only came after 40 minutes - and it costs 450B to get to the Phae Gate area.
Overall, service and price was acceptable for a somewhat unique Chiang Mai experience - but I most likely wouldn’t...
