The Terracotta Garden is a 20 Rai site situated in Lamphun, Northern Thailand, not far from the Ping River. The garden had originally two principal functions; creating hand-carved terracotta art and sculptures; and cultivating rare Thai plants together with a new additional coffeeshop annex and restaurant with western and local cuisine. The terracotta art is modelled on ancient S.E. Asian styles with influences including Thai, Cambodian, Chinese and Indonesia. This has resulted in a wonderful hybrid art style, which the garden showcases.
Originally once a farm, the site was developed in 1982 by the owner and artist Khun Suttiphong Maiwan, of the Phor Liang Meun Terra Cotta Arts company. to become a production site for handicrafts and earthenware. “Phor Liang” means “stepfather” in Thai and “Muen” means “ten thousand bricks” which were also produced in a traditional way (in Tao-Mang-Gorn “Dragon” ovens), using thick local clay. Khun Suttiphong has created numerous sculptures and his work is influenced by Lanna, Thai, Hariphuncha, Hindi, Chinese and Khmer styles. His sculptures include bas-reliefs, high reliefs, wall hangings, lanterns and archways and lintels, which are sold both domestically and internationally.
The outstanding feature is “Phra Maha Chedi” that imitates the art of S.E. Asia. There are outstanding Terracotta wall panels within the Chedi, together with many beautiful external panels, reliefs...
Read moreWe had lunch at the restaurant before walking around the gardens. The restaurant is aimed at the tourist market. The inside restaurant is cool and comfortable, but can be noisy when there's a lot of people there. The staff are polite and helpful, the service good. The food and drinks are beautifully presented. I thought the menu was limited, with typical tourist Thai food, and some western food. I had the phad Thai - great presentation, a shame the prawns tasted cooked then frozen, then reheated. The gardens are really interesting - it's worth going to see the various works in terracotta. We went on a Sunday. As we walked into the restaurant we noticed a tourist bus parked nearby, so we had to wait 10-15 minutes for a table inside the restaurant, which was really noisy until all the bus people had left. If you're going to Lamphun, include time to visit the...
Read moreTerrible experience!Damn it Today, the temperature outside is close to 40 degrees, and the clerk told me that I can only eat my food and drinks outside.Because all the tables in the room are reserved after 3 o'clock.Although there were only two tables at that time. This is very ridiculous. And tell me after I order and pay,If you tell me before I order, I can at least choose to eat or not.But they told me one minute after I ordered, I could still sit indoors for two minutes until 3 pm. But a table of Korean guests behind me was not asked to move outside.Maybe that Korean is their grandfather.
Very good, it was raining outside, so I let my child finish his orange cake in the rain. Fortunately, there is no charge for rainwater. The clerk made the most rude request with the most polite attitude. Thanks again and...
