When we have arrived in Khao Lak, we were surprised how many tourist restaurants they had. Since we do not spend 900 € / person for traveling into a tourist hell, we asked locals where to get the real local food. This was the address to go.

We ordered everything on the menu, mostly fish and deep fried stuff, soups and curries. People in southern Thailand seem to eat very spicy and very sour. Nothing you would expect when eating the standard dishes at tourist restaurants. The taste, however, a solid 9 out of 10... really nice. Unbelievable how you get this delicious food for that low price. We did not see a single tourist there, just Thai people which enjoyed a meal after a day of work.

The owner is really nice and his family too. Their daughter speaks English well and translated the menu for us.

One thing to try there... it is the green tea shake. And by god I never had a better one or anything coming close to this. Their shakes are awesome. Honestly... maybe full of sugar, but honestly, they...

This place serves up sensational Southern Thai and classic Thai cuisine. The seating is spotless, but the real kicker? It opens early. Every dish arrived swiftly and, most importantly, was absolutely delicious.

The highlights:

Pad Thai with prawns wrapped in egg – THB 60

Gaeng Hoi Bai Chaplu (spicy clam curry with wild betel leaves) – packed with flavour.

Gaeng Som with crispy pork belly – hands down one of the best renditions of this Southern sour curry I’ve had.

Portions are generous (feeds 2–3 people), so don’t go overboard unless you fancy leftovers. Loved it, and I’ll...

This local restaurant was recommended by Jack at Saifah Society (a little coffee shop further down road). The restaurant greeted us warmly and kindly and served up some fantastic eats. We did not hesitate to return. When they saw me scratching my ankles from mosquito bites I received from earlier in the week, they brought me mosquito repellent just in case. They did the same when we returned to dine with them a few days later :) Really great people serving really great food at amazing prices....

Came across this little spot close to our accommodation and I’m so sad we didn’t find it sooner. The food was unbelievably delicious. We asked the waitress for a recommendation and she suggested Mussamam curry and it was out of this world. Alongside several great coconut shakes, an omelette, stir fried chicken and Thai basil and morning glory with crispy pork, we were very full. The price was also very reasonable. Highly recommend!
