Going north, it’s on the next side road (left) after So Sofitel. TomTom SatNav took us accurately, the slightly more correct address is: 16/7 Tambon Bang Kao, Amphoe Cha-am, Chang Wat
The restaurant had a small English sign but the first 2 letters had broken off and it said nDee. A large, clean, covered open air place overlooking school grounds on the far side, tables are well spaced. We were not greeted even though we said sawadekha as we walked in.
The young waitress was shy but willing, the tiny old woman seemed bitter and suspicious although she had a few words of English. The TV was on loudly. English menus were brought quickly but, apart from that, we mainly communicated with Thai translations of standard restaurant words that we carry with us and with the online translator. As the place was empty when we arrived at 6pm, we refrained from ordering fish in case it might not be fresh enough.
Food arrived in minutes. Steamed rice was 15B and there are sometimes fresh coconuts in the fridge, at 40B. The battered shrimp (150B) came with onion rings and was crispy but very oily.
The stir fried mixed vegetables (80B) were varied and in a lovely, delicate oyster sauce. There was none of the cabbage that usually makes up 80% of this dish.
The chicken and coconut soup came last (80B) and was just OK but with real pieces of chicken (we usually fear they might be cat or dog, due to the horrid meat texture in most such places).
By the time we left, 2 other tables were occupied by foreigners. There were particularly vicious mosquitoes but surprisingly no flies. No electric fans anywhere. No mosquito coil provided even though this is standard in the evenings, at open air restaurants.
We were not interested in returning even though it was very close to where we were staying. The unfriendly old woman and the mosquitoes left a bad taste whenever we thought...
Read moreSo good we came back for two consecutive nights. Great choice of quality Thai options. The staff here are very friendly - minimal English spoken but we both managed to order. The owners’ Sister even drove us back to our hotel (so Sofitel) one evening when we were struggling to get a taxi! We tried lots of food here - green curry, spicy noodle salad, prawns, pad Thai… coconuts are cold and reasonably priced too. If you’re staying in the local hotels I’d definitely check this place out and support some of the local restaurants. Prawns with broccoli was our family favourite!
Not a reflection on the restaurant, but it was really sad to walk into a family restaurant and see every table in absolute silence as everyone (from parents to children) were all on their iPads and phones! What happened to families bonding over the dinner table! Leave your phones in your bags or...
