Decided to check this place out during my lunch break, hoping to become a regular, given Couva's complete lack of hole-in-the-wall Chinese fast food. Both I and the unfortunate friend I convinced to join me wound up spending the entirety of our hour breaks just WAITING for the food to arrive. Our orders? Bog-standard noodles/rice, chow mein, and pork/chicken (Our respective orders). These standard dishes would take anywhere from 10-15 minutes at even the cheapest Chinese fast food place, but somehow took 50 minutes from the time ordered till they arrived. Labelled as Medium on the menu, arrived in boxes that couldn't be called anything but small. His chicken and rice cost $35, while my pork cost $52. Absurd for the portions, but whatever.
Regarding the length of time we were waiting, the staff did attempt to excuse themselves by saying that there were a lot of people. From the time we walked in to the time we left, there was only one other group in there aside from us. One table, four people. While they did each have orders pending, they got served shortly after our arrival—nowhere near enough food to justify our wait. But fine, maybe that wait would be worth it when I was back at work and eating while on the clock?
It wasn't.
Green is the only word you could use to describe the food this place served us. The moment both of us opened the boxes to see what we'd been waiting for, we were assaulted with the overpowering stench of green seasoning, and I can assure you it tasted just like it smelled. The "chefs" working there were clearly compensating hard for lack of skill by trying to cover up the taste of their food, and even with that they did a poor job. It's not hard to see why this was necessary though. My friend's rice had the texture of plastic, severely undercooked. The chow mein I ordered took up a majority of my container—I had to dig to find any noodles—and tasted as though the veggies had just been chopped up, briefly boiled, and drenched in the sauce and seasoning. And the meat? My friend's chicken was probably the only part of this ordeal that could be described as "alright". The 2 maybe two spoonfuls of pork that I got for $50 were half fat and bone. And these were thin strips, so we're talking entire cuts in the box that were nothing but crisped fat. It's blatant that no mind was paid when portioning the meat for the order.
All in all, it was an atrocious first and last experience at the Lady Gay Restaurant. I advise anyone who appreciates good food, and the concept of receiving good value for their money, to...
