Duke of Wellington — Restaurant in Ashfield

I have been here before but not recently. First impressions today were not good. Our table was booked for 12:00 and the lady who unlocked the door disappeared into the kitchen and nobody else appeared for a few minutes. There were no menus either. Eventually a young girl came and gave us a menu and served us drinks. We ordered the steak and mushroom pie and it was absolutely delicious. All home cooked and piping hot. Good value at £6.95. This pub used to be very busy on a Sunday and it’s a shame that it isn’t the case now. It has recently been refurbished and is clean with a nice decor. We regularly visit for Sunday lunch but this week we went on Saturday for a meal! I had the chicken trio from the specials board and it was amazing! My partner had steak and said it was well seasoned how he likes it and was one of the best steaks he has ever had and cooked to perfection! The cost of the meal was very reasonable and we have paid more for much worse food ! The staff are amazing at customer service and very friendly! I am not easy to please as I am a trained cook and cannot believe the quality of this food! You really do need to pay a visit so you can see for yourself! Well...

Today we went after they’ve had a new chef and what a different experience. The staff were all lovely as usual but the food was so slow (we were the only people in). The food was not great. Fish and chips obviously not homemade, dry chicken, overcooked pasta, unseasoned sauces. There was nothing close to the selection of mains or desserts there used to be. Atmosphere is always good though, great playlist and good wine.
