We went to The Greendale Oak for a birthday meal with friends and had issues from the start to the end of our experience. One of our party has an allergy and asked for an allergen menu. The waitress returned with an allergen menu and stated nothing on the menu contained sesame except the burger buns which could be swapped out for an alternative bun. When reviewing the menu there were other dishes that clearly contained sesame. Fortunately the meals were obvious in that they contained the allergen, however this was not what the waitress had said.
Our waitress visited our table infrequently and inconsistently meaning we had to get the drinks from the bar ourselves. On one of the times that our waitress did come to the table, we asked for water (this was not offered at any point). She said "no problem" and said she would get some. We asked her a second time later on, another waiter another time and the bar staff (when ordering other drinks). We never received water during the ~2.5 hours we were there.
One of the starters arrived on the table as the rest of us were finishing our own starters. One of the main meals arrived and was incorrect (different burger meal to the one ordered).
It may seem petty but there was a constant beeping noise ringing out every few seconds from (what I think) was the paper running out on one of the receipt printers. While it may seem small, I am not sure why all the staff in the room ignored the noise and let it play out for so long. I asked one of the waiters to please turn off the noise and to his credit he did, but a few minutes later it began again where it rang out for a further 15 minutes or so.
In summary, it was a terribly poor service. We were forgotten about, had food arrive at different times, had incorrect food served, had incorrect advice about allergens (which warrants accuracy), had a poor atmosphere (felt like I was a Maccies kitchen half the time and didn't receive water when asked (4 times).
A manager waived £20 off our £200+ bill but it felt like trying to suck blood from a stone as she was resilient initially with offering anything further than voiding the late starter off the bill. No real ownership of their mistakes and she made the party feel awkward when asking for something to compensate the poor service. She wasn't hospitable and made us feel like we were in the wrong when we raised the issues with service.
The food and drink however was very good and reasonably priced, and our waitress was polite.
There wasn't anything that went majority wrong, instead there were lots of smaller issues that added up. I wouldn't recommend The Greendale Oak and I'm sure there are plenty other lovely pubs in the area worth...
Read moreHave visited as a party of 8 quite a few times as location of pub is perfect, ie 4 from Dronfield area,2 from Leicester, 2 from East Yorkshire. As we entered pub noticed specials board, with Hot roast beef sandwich, gravy and chips, also Pork sandwich with apple sauce etc. Accordingly food ordered. 2 beef sandwich, 3 pork sandwich, 2 salads,1 lasagne. Only found out this visit that small portions could be ordered ,but couldn't order small lasagne? The small portions are for children's menu, so if a child wants lasagne then they'll get an adult sized portion. Food came!!!The beef and pork sandwiches were open sandwiches, ie a wafer thin oval of supposedly bread. You couldn't cut the beef, you needed a steak knife really to cut it. Very poor cut of meat. I had to dash to the toilet as I choked on a piece of the beef. The salads were very poor consisting of 95% rocket with very little else green salad. When complained about sandwiches told waitress had forgotten to put "Open " sandwich on specials board and she would change description on board immediately. (Description not changed when we left 20 minutes later)Supervisor reluctantly came, only charged half price for beef sandwiches, I'm sorry but they weren't even worth that price. Very disappointing and very poor experience. Our party of 8 will meet somewhere else in future. Note that owner who replies please read reviews. I've only given 1 star so I can post a review. Please read reviews thoroughly as you're getting a lot of negative comments so something is definitely wrong. Personally we drove for 1 and a half hours for a terrible dining experience. Will NEVER visit again!!!!! No wonder place was very quiet. Have viewed owners reply to my review. What can I say?Very poor reply. The review was my genuine take on the place. Very, very disappointing. But obviously make your...
Read moreI think we visited on a very trying night for the staff at the Greendale Oak, hence the 3 star rating. A significant number of the menu options were not possible, namely the scampi, and we had the last fish pie (despite our table being booked for 6pm on a Saturday night and there being many more diners arriving) and some of the cocktails were not possible as they had run out of ingredients.
We had pizza and burgers, all of which were very nice - however we also ordered the duck in hoisin sauce which I'm disappointed to say was woeful and could have been mistaken for a cat food in gravy - we quickly swapped this for another burger. We got the feeling that perhaps some of the food was cooked from frozen.
Furthermore, we were charged for a drink that we never had (because they didn't have the ingredients for a Bellini), so our overall experience was not a very positive one, but we thought that the waiter who served us did an excellent job despite him finding himself having to apologise so many times for the lack of options available from the menu (food and cocktail menus).
We'd like to go back again another time, and hopefully enjoy what many others have said about the venue, and so as I said at the start, we are putting this down to just one of those bad nights every restaurant has once in a while, but I hope the owners take note of the comments made.
We also felt that because menu is quite broad in range, that perhaps this could be the cause for the overall quality not being as high as we expected, and that maybe if the menu was less wide-ranging, the chefs would have more time to concentrate on higher quality offerings, and the staff would not be put in the difficult position of having to hope that diners didn't order food that simply...
