Fantastic country pub! Next to the comfortable, well spec’d Leeming Wells Hotel where we were staying when we visited Haworth. There was no accommodation in the village so we thought we’d be making a compromise. Far from it! What a gem of a place! As Storm Isha approached the British Isles we were greeted by roaring fires at either end of the main room with the bar, a reasonable number of guests, friendly staff offering excellent service. The six of us set up a tab and settled in for the night. Good selection of Timothy Taylor beers and quality Italian Primitivo wine. Good choice of food on the menu which was of restaurant quality. I highly recommend the Famous Dog & Gun Lamb Henry! A shoulder of lamb that fell off the bone accompanied with delicious, thick gravy, veg and you must go with the mash for this dish over the chips so you can mop up every drop of that gravy. Don’t get me wrong the chips look fantastic - triple-cooked? All proper home cooking. No manufactured pud-grub! We returned to the bar after our top-notch meal and were the last to leave at the end of the night. No sense of urgency from the barman for us to clear-off who engaged in our banter as he finished off his end of shift refreshment. Back at the hotel, we were a bit naughty and had a quick dip in the pool (open 8am-8pm). Dog & Gun + Leeming Well Hotel: What a venue! Not a compromise for our weekend away with friends … an...
Read moreThe location is great with stunning views across the moors and the reviews were good, so we decided to try it for the first time for food one cold Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately the quality of the food did not hit the level it should be for the prices being charged. I'm a big fan of roast dinners, but decided against it after being told by the waitress that all the meats are cooked well done. I opted for the slow roasted Lamb Henry instead which I was told was cooked in gravy for 4hrs, sounded yummy. However when it arrived there was a tough dry layer of meat on the top and a mint gravy poured round it, as if it had been cooked in its gravy a few days prior, transferred and chilled and then reheated. Not the best Henry I've had but, ok. My fellow dinner ordered duck starter. On arrival you could see that the pieces of roasted breast were dried out as you could see dusty bits of meat left by the carving knife and the edges were curled up. Our suspicions were confirmed when they tried to cut into the meat and weren't able to so had to be returned. Whoever is responsible for quality in the kitchen really needs to pay more attention to what is being put out there, and the waiting staff to call it out if the quality isn't where it needs to be. For us, we won't be going there again which is a shame as we enjoy local pub...
Read moreSo an honest appraisal.
Lovely service, right up to the point of settling up.
Drinks as per, cracking.
Mains.... Lamb Henry, legend status, amazing Salmon and Brie Wellington, superb Belly Pork, divine. Jumbo Deep Fried Scampi. Another story, dreadful portion size, presentation, woeful 9 pieces circled around a half lemon on a huge plate, served with 3 (Three) new potatoes, and a tablespoon of garden peas, for £18.95.
We made the server aware of our disappointment, and were offered little or no explanation.
Upon asking for the bill and checking the details, I was astounded that we had been charged the full amount, and when we questioned were told that the wholesale cost to them is very expensive and in addition to this, that people go to the pub just for that dish.
If your wholesale cost is too high, then refuse to buy it and source it from elsewhere. Dreadful attitude from a stand-in landlord whilst the main man is on holiday. Unfortunately let us down on one element with zero offer to compensate our offer an alternative. I want to swear but will refrain. We'll be back, but it will be for the three dishes that were outstanding.
Note to Tomothy Taylors, customer service training in need at the...
