Abysmal, inedible food at outrageously inflated prices. Five years ago this place did incredible food and was winning rave reviews, to see how far it has fallen is really sad.

We went here for Mother's Day and had the three-course set menu. Every single course was awful.

The starter of soup was very clearly from a can, it had the same gelatinous wobble consistency and tastes exactly the same as the leading brand. This was enough of a shock, but it only got worse.

For mains our party had Roast Beef and Roast Lamb Dinners. We were all in agreement that these were potentially the worst roast dinners we had ever had. Everything was disastrously overcooked to the point of losing both texture and flavour. Both meats were like bland tough old leather. The vegetables had been boiled to death to the extent that they had lost their colour and become dull mush, the green beans were particularly inedible. The potatoes were woeful and yet again massively overcooked; the mash was gloop and the roasties were similarly overcooked mush inside, and not all crispy on the outside. The only thing on the entire plate that wasn't completely ruined/unpleasant was the roast carrot. We all left the majority of these plates. It was genuinely unpleasant to eat.

Still being hungry given the awfulness of the first two courses, we were desperately hopeful that dessert would be much better, I mean how much could one even ruin an Eton Mess? Quite a lot it turns out; for they forgot the meringue. It was merely a bowl of chopped up strawberries and cream. Admittedly it tasted okay so was probably the best of the disastrous meal, but not even by the most liberal application of the term could one describe what was served as 'Eton Mess' given the lack of the main ingredient; meringue.

Being charged £25 per head and being served what I would honestly describe as hospital food, was outrageous. I can only assume that they did not have someone with any restaurant-level catering training whatsoever in the kitchen on the day that we visited given that they thought it anywhere near acceptable to serve food which is so very clearly ruined. Even a school dinner lady would know that what they served needed to the thrown out and started from scratch.

The poor food was not helped by staff who were literally running around the restaurant and being short/blunt with customers, random broken Christmas decorations adorning the walls and rafters despite it being March, and a deafening roar from other customers which made it feel like a primary school canteen.

So to summize; awful food, lacking service, and unpleasant aesthetic/vibes. For the first time in my life I was tempted to leave without paying given how poor the experience was. Alas we did not, we simply paid and got out as quickly as we could. It was quite upsetting given that this meal was a gift to our mother and we'd travelled from quite far away to this part of England in order to see her and celebrate with her. Shame...

Me and my partner decided to have the fish and chips at Coach and horses. I did book a table but received no reply. The waitress said that the person that incharge on the booking email wasn't there tonight (I think she's made up this stuff too) When I arrived after sitting at one of the empty tables, just to be told by the same waitress that they are fully booked. The serving time is only until 9pm and that time it was already 8.15pm. Went back down to the bar (my partner was ordering the drinks) and the lady (probably the manager) told us that she will find us a table, and we managed to sit at the table where I first sat. The point that I was getting at is the waitress that was incharged on the restaurant area was lying because she can't be bothered to served another customer that eating in the restaurant's tables. As part of her job she brings in (order to the bar) our new drinks without asking if we want a top up and tonight she's ended up bringing the wrong beer for my partner just by following the glass it was served in. The glass was Stella but the drink that he first drink was Cuzcampo. My partner did not point this out as he do not want the fuss. For the rest of the night there was no other customers turns up at the reseaurant to sit at those empty tables that she claimed "fully booked". Lovely place and the fish and chips was nice and the portion was massive but won't be coming back to eat here again as we don't...

Visited as part of a large family Christmas meal on Saturday night and a little suprised to see the restaurant empty other than another large birthday group. To be fair this may have been due to England game. In general we had a great night and the staff, especially our waiter were friendly and helpful. The only downside but a key area was some of the meals were of a poor standard.6 of the party had ordered the Balti which when served was in a small bowl and at best a size i would consider as a childs portion. When we raised this the wsiter consulted the kitchen and advised us that the small portions were due to the chef trying to eke outwhat he had left and they had also run out of poppadoms. Surely it would have been better to have advised of shortfall up front so we could have selected another choice. Was only charged half price but that is not the point. My wife had ordered Hunters chicken and the bacon wrapped round had been cooked to the point it was so hard it was inedible. So food was mixed some ok others poor. Shame because we had a great social night and didn't let food spoil it but on a personal level the pub is one we hadn't visited for a number of years but was on our radar to try out for lunchtime or evening meals in the near future. This food experience has put a doubt to that which is a shame because the pub itself and staff was...

Disappointing Experience – In Need of a Serious Refresh Unfortunately, our visit left a lot to be desired. The place clearly needs a refurb – the carpets and chairs are noticeably old and worn, and we were seated near the smelly toilets which didn’t make for the most appetising start. The drinks tray was sticky, tables weren’t properly cleaned, dusty table legs and to top it off, the Christmas decorations were still up, adding to the tired and neglected feel. The servers station at the entrance looked tatty and cluttered, which didn’t make a great first impression. Staffing seemed to be an issue – either understaffed or just poorly managed. While our server was friendly, they weren’t very attentive. They were using a central table as place for all the dirty glasses. We were given our bill on a small plate taken from that dirty plate/glasses table. The wine glasses were mismatched and had dirty rims, giving the impression they’d been sitting on a dirty shelf. We had the beef roast dinner and the lamb shank. The beef was tasteless and overcooked. Lamb was nice. The roast potatoes were a highlight – tasty and crispy. But sadly, that was one of the few redeeming features. Not somewhere I’d rush back to without some major improvements.

Used to use this pub years back when Phill & Sheila owned and ran it. We decided to stop off and have lunch. I was told by the barmaid in a rather curt manner, that they had now stopped serving food & the kitchen is now closed. So, had to settle for 2 ham cobs. We then sat in the garden & I had a chance to look at the bill, & was blown away at the price for 2 ham cobs, a mind blowing 7.90!! Not sure who makes the cobs up, but you can tell they're done at speed. The butter is just a dollop on each side of the cob, not spread at all. I don't think it is too much to ask at 3.95 each? After all, you are serving food. I'd expect that level of presentation at sweaty Betty's road side café. Ham was like boot leather, too; and warm. Not a great experience, but will not be visiting again at those prices for food that is barely, edible. Food that is wrapped in cling film for heaven knows how long. Great location, but our server, the quality & standard of food, together with the mortgage required to purchase 2 warm ham cobs, not in a rush to go back.

I brought my husband a book from a charity shop for our wedding anniversary which is 25 years old...we thought it would be great to go walking and to find the pubs in book to see if still there re take pictures...to our delight this one was! We didn't eat in restaurant but had a good old fahioned cob served from the bar and drink as we had grif our dog with us...pub is dog friendly lots of pups there. Large car park friendly helpful staff...beer garden...menu for restaurant looks scrummy so will be returning to sample soon. Their own micro brewery on same site as pub you could smell the hops....great to see a pub still thriving since 1780!
