UPDATE August 2025

We visited The Alma Inn after not being here for a while and it seems the food is not as strong as it used to be. The beef brisket croquettes were delicious but the loaded nachos were just plain nachos with the usual dips on and a couple of jalapenos thrown on - hardly worth £9.50, and they needed another £3.50 from us for some pulled pork to be added to actually make them 'loaded'.

The mains were disappointing also. Three of us had the burgers and the meat just wasn't good enough, it was some kind of compressed meat rather than succulent beef mince - we all said the same. The pulled pork burger with the pork patty was tough to eat and the upgraded bbq pulled pork was bland. The roast dinner with pink beef was apparently good, however.

The menu is just too big - particularly on Sundays - with not enough focus on quality, which is a shame. If they trimmed it down and focussed on flavour rather then choice I think they'd be back on track, food wise.

However, the service was excellent as always with really friendly staff and the setting, as always, was perfect.

They've made some positive changes to the decor & layout and it works really well.

Still 4 stars but trim that menu down!

UPDATE May 2021

I have to say the service here is so thoughtful and attentive. The team noticed that the chldren were a little cold sat in the marquee so offered to move us inside where it was warmer. It's little touches like this that make such a difference. Well done, Alma Inn.

UPDATE February 2019

Things have improved here a lot! Huge improvement in the atmosphere and the food was delicious. We were told there were new owners and all the staff were so much friendlier as it used to feel rather oppressive in there.

OLD REVIEW

The only reason we go here is for the decent beer & the view. There's rarely a welcoming feel at the Alma and the food is pretty dull, but...

Have been to this pub before . It’s a 30 minute drive for us . The last time a couple of months ago , the whole experience was just ok . Last night we went again and was so disappointed. We ate at 8pm and was a table of 4. The service was terrible . We ordered mains and had to wait 50 mins . It didn’t appear particularly busy but there was a birthday party in and it appeared the majority of the staff knew them so they were the focus . The staff on the whole are very young and although pleasant , I wouldn’t say efficient. As I said , last night the focus was on the party group, even if it was to chat ! I fact there was a lot of staff stood around chatting . The person who appeared to be the senior , did most of the standing around . And so to our meals . As said the service was slow , we had to remind and remind for things we had asked for . Not once did staff come and ask if we wanted sauces for example or anything else . My prosciutto pizza came without the prosciutto! So they brought a bowl with hardly cooked prosciutto in it . The corn on the cob was rotten inside and the halloumi fries were particularly dry and over cooked. The food and experience was definitely not worth the drive or the money , all in all . I suppose , in these times when the cost of living has gone up for all of us, trade must be aware of this and ensure quality and...

Quite frankly, l dont think the previous 2 reviewers could have stayed at The Alma Inn (and unbelievably, yes, it is possible to write a review about an establishment without having ever been there...which quite frankly makes the whole 'Tripadviser' thing wholly wrong, and should not exist, for that reason, plus a restaurant/pub/hotel etc not being allowed to opt out of Tripadvisor. lt allows the likes of the negative reviewers (below) to put themselves on an imaginary pedestal. l personally owned and ran two very successful Bistros in Wirral some years ago, and thank heavens the likes of Tripadvisor wasnt around then. In defence of The Alma Inn, l was recommended to stay here,( by a local pub l stopped to ask about somewhere good to stay overnight) So good was it, l altered my plans, and stayed an extra night ! The owners couldnt have made me more welcome..(something a single female traveller misses out on) The food was great, my room was perfect...fancy someone complaining about a room having a beam...perhaps a travel lodge would suit them more ! And finally, the icing on the cake, was Ruby, their gorgeous rescue Spaniel, tucked up in the corner..bothering nobody...but wagging her tail as people arrived and left. l cant wait to go again, and hopefully there'll be snow, to lock us in for...

February 2025: definitely one of the best pubs in the area. Been back many times and finding a table to eat, without booking, is never too much to ask. The team are always friendly and hospitable. Very good service. Great food selection. October 2022: Popped in with the dogs. November 2021: Booked huge table for birthday. Snow outside. Christmas market inside. Service was sluggish but it was very busy to be fair. Food okay; roast dinner lacked real flavour. I still love it here so will keep coming back. July 2023: I absolutely love it here, but we ordered chorizo as a starter and it was undercooked - we had to send it back. We also had some chicken wings and buffalo sauce, and although it tasted delicious, they certainly won’t fresh. Both my wife and I were unwell the next day! Can’t fault the service and the views though… August 2021: Lovely location; plenty seating. Good value for Sunday roast. Polite staff and COVID-safe. We ordered x5 Sunday roast dinners; x2 kids fish and chips. Loved the Hebden beer. The nachos were a good portion (for two) as a starter; shame the dips are out of a packet and not homemade. That's the only reason for 4 stars, plus the car park very busy/small.

We came for an evening meal and the lady welcomed us straight from the door to our table, her service skills were very warm hearted and genuine. During our meal we had a waiter called Rosie, she was impeccable. A real credit to Alma Inn, nothing was a bother and customer service was on point. I watched her interacting with the customers with such a warm soul and beautiful smile. She deserves a mention and recognition as her service has made me want to come back. There was also another lady blonde hair very happy soul, she was funny, the best part was in the restaurant it was a bit smokey and she came through the door and was like " I feel like I'm on stars In your eyes" this made the night. We laughed sooo much. The food was 5* credit to the chef. The steak was 100 times nicer than Marco Pierre Whites steakhouse in London that we recently had. Couldn't fault it. It was hot, fresh and tasty. It was our first time here and it wouldn't be the last. I'm already looking forward to our next visit. So if anyone hasn't been here before, I highly recommend it. Service- 5* Food - 5* Ambiance - 5*

The only reason the service didn't get 5 stars was for small things missing that I thought in this day and age are offered in almost all B&Bs such as Brown bread choice at Breakfast ,Along with jam and marmalade, perhaps honey...and to run out of orange juice isn't a good thing and then tell your customer on a Wed that you won't have any until the next Wed.. I mean somebody should go to the shop if that's the case, which in all fairness they did or must of done as the next morning you had some. And only a 4 for the room as some attention to detail on things like some areas of the cleaning .But otherwise it was a smashing location and the food was great ..wasn't the cheapest nor the dearest , but the dark haired waitress was brilliant and a very good people person .out of your control..butboyfor somewhere that's rather rural and slightly off the beaten track it gets alot of noisy passing traffic
