Visited this evening – beautiful old pub with lots of character. Ye Old Yew is a charming, historic spot (dating back to the 1300s!) with a warm, welcoming atmosphere. I visited on my own with my dog after it was recommended. Staff were friendly, and the overall vibe was relaxed, with a mostly older crowd.
I did run into a bit of confusion with my meal. I ordered a salmon dish thinking it was a hot main course, but it turned out to be a warm salmon salad. While that was mentioned on the menu, it was easy to miss — and the presentation didn’t help. It came in a large bowl but was quite a small portion, which made it feel underwhelming, especially at £24.
I gave some friendly feedback to the manager, suggesting salads might be clearer if grouped in their own section. Her response — “we can’t put a Polaroid on it” — felt a bit dismissive. She also explained the price was due to local sourcing and overheads, which I do understand, but I still felt the portion and value didn’t quite match.
As someone dining alone, I wasn’t looking for anything special, but a little more understanding or even a small gesture would’ve gone a long way.
I did stay for dessert, which was lovely, and the setting really is beautiful — cosy, full of character, and dog-friendly. I’d happily return for a drink and the ambiance, but I’d be more cautious about ordering...
Read morecelebrating both myself and my wife's joint birthdays. Very disappointed with the food. Yes, it was presented well, but if less time was taken over the presentation maybe the food would be hotter rather than Luke warm. The service was very slow, we arrived at 12.10pm, there was only one other table seated a short time after us but they were served far quicker. We left at 14.35 after the deserts. Very disappointed with the bread and butter pudding. Played a game find the sultana's etc but seemed to have plenty of sliced apple ( never personally added apple to my bread and butter pudding). For the price charged very unlikely will use the yew tree again even though this public house is local to us, What should have a pleasant birthday meal with the family is nothing to write home about and would not recommend it to eat, but is a very good drinking establishment. Not one to usually complain in a review but needed to express...
Read moreBusy Bank Holiday weekend, garden full even at 12:30 I told my friend to book just in case and glad we did. I've eaten here on a number of occasions and never been disappointed. Today was no exception, the staff are friendly and the food is generally a high standard, not too cheap but good portions and tasty sauces, whatever some negative reviewers might say. I first came here in the early 1980's when it was a much smaller pub with a small counter by the corner and people playing domino's and shove Ha penny at the bar or cribbage! It's got bags of character and simple seating with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Be sure to ring and book just in case! Great place to start or end a walk from! Often full of walkers and cyclists as well as car trade! Small car park at rear of property, if you have elderly or disabled guests drop them off before parking as the pub is located overlooking the former quarry pits in the...
