Wonderful friendly olde world English pub. Great menu, a Sunday roast to die for. Gorgeous open fire. A must visit venue. Thankyou for the friendly welcome.

About to lose its family friendly reputation by allowing far right meeting's on the premises.

Changing this review based on experience last night. Been using this pub for some years now and was happy to support it through the pandemic. But sadly we will not be returning.

Had been here for a beer lunchtime in the sunshine and had a good time. Came back about 7pm to get a table for the live music so my wife could join me. The pub was filling up and the air was stale and humid. I had a coughing fit at the table and asked a passing waitress if I could open the window a little. When nothing happened I raised this with the landlord. The rather curt response I got was to tell me that if I had worries about covid I should say at home. This was rude and insulting and worse insensitive given he knew I had been very ill with covid in November.

Having spent a lot of money here over the years we will now go elsewhere where our custom is valued and we are treated with respect. Edit 20-3-22 further evidence of disdainful attitude in owner response is assertion I was drunk (untrue). Also hadn't booked any table - read my comment carefully again - so also untrue. Suggest we leave...

Have stopped for a pint or two, and / or eaten here on many occasions. The place itself is tucked away nicely in an quiet village just outside Chelmsford heading out on the A414, making it an ideal place to stop on route to, or back from Chelmsford, taking only a couple of minutes easy diversion. For the last couple of years the management has really been on point, the staff are Uber friendly and the food really does have to be tried, my favourite's are the steaks and desserts MMM !! There are plenty of decent beers, wines and champagne's here to try, a lovely fresh inside dining and bar area with a decent size rear garden in a secluded setting with pleasant seating and smoking area. They often have live music and events going on and even concessions for senior citizens too. Highly recommended, family friendly country establishment !! Well done Chris...

The Chequers held our family gathering after our Nan’s funeral. Everyone was very complimentary of the amazing spread they laid for us. The food was outstanding and I believe that some items were home made which made it even more wonderful. It certainly wasn’t tasteless food!! The staff were so efficient and nothing was too much trouble. There were approximately 50 of us but the staff were swift and experienced and served us in no time. Everything ran smoothly and I can honestly say it sealed the end of the day perfectly. Thank you ‘Chequers Staff’ you...
