Local pub that I haven't revisited for 27 years as the last time I went in it was a classic bay'nt be welcome here experience. Pleased to report it has definitely changed for the better. I had heard several promising reports so decided to go for lunch with a friend. We were greeted very cheerily and asked if we had a reservation. This really surprised me as it was a rather wet Wednesday ( and at this point we were the only potential customers) I said no and we were shown to a table that would be needed at 2pm, which was fine. At this point I did think that some heating would be good because it was very chilly. However within about 20 minutes the place was heaving , and considerably warmer, with all those bodies. The menu is good very much something for everyone. Classics like fish and chips, steak and ale pie and gammon as well as a curry either veggie or with chicken. This is what my friend had. She said it was really tasty, not too hot but really well spiced. It came with naan bread and she chose half chips half rice. It was quite a playful. I had the goats cheese tart with red onion chutney, sweet potato fries and a lettuce, tomato and pine nut salad. This consisted of a very crisp pastry base with chutney in the bottom and the most enormous slab of chevre cheese that had probably been grilled. It was lovely and I love goats cheese but I did feel it was a quite overwhelming amount. The salad acted as a nice foil to the richness and there were a lot of pinenuts . In summary good service, busy although it was school Easter holidays I suppose, good generous portions of food a reasonably wide ranging menu. Good friendly service and very good coffee. With a glass of Malbec and a coke the bill was ÂŁ45. Would go again but next time I will book and go a little later to allow the...
Read moreLovely pub with great beers on offer and an enticing menu. We had a "fly in the soup" moment at this pub that left us very disappointed and I would say ruined our experience. Arrived at 1730, two adults, two kids and ordered our food. We were very specific to the waitress regarding my daughters burger meal and we even laughed as my daughter specified - NO Cheese. Anyway, the burger came out with cheese on and we immediately told the waitress. Coincidentally from this point, we were no longer seen by the original waitress who took the order. In short, the burger was returned back to the table with the cheese scraped off, which is really poor and my daughter was unhappy. It really felt like the burger had gone back into the kitchen and was manhandled to get the melted cheese off, albeit unsuccessfully . At this point, we'd gone from having a lovely time to being messed about and I felt the need to share my disappointment with a waitress who returned some time later with a fresh burger, as we had originally ordered and said it was coming off the bill. This is not a big chain pub and the prices reflect the standard that is trying to be achieved, whilst the food is excellent, our experience was a bit of a mess and scraping cheese off a burger is what I'd expect from a soulless pub chain. Customers who feel like they're cared about will come back and the care only arose when we were forced to...
Read moreMy daughter organised a table of 20 for 17:15 for a 50th birthday meal. The menu offered for a large table was very limited and she pointed out that there was no chicken, salad or lighter option. They said they can offer a Chicken Ceasar salad, so 3 people ordered this. We were asked to arrive 15 mins before the table booking so they could get the food out at 5.15 but this didn't happen. When the mains arrived the Ceasar salad really wasn't great, a huge bowl of lettuce, some chicken breast, a few tiny slithers of crispy bacon and 1 crouton (in mine) it was disappointing but on paying we were horrified to find that they wanted £24 for the salad, £72 for 3 salads!! Is this a Mitchelin star salad? It was mediocre at best, my other daughter left most of hers. When questioned the manager stated that the salad wasn't on the menu (they offered it though) and they had to charge extra as they had to but the ingredients??? Generally the ceasar salad is £16 there. Was the chicken's arse decked with diamonds maybe? Overall, this is the second time we've been disappointed, the last time, out of our table of 8, 7 of us were served terrible food and only mine was nice. They just ignored it when we complained that everything that had been fried was burned. The fish and chips they tried to serve my daughter in-law was dark brown!! Such a shame as we used to...
