Popped in for Sunday lunch. The gentleman behind the bar was very frosty. He looked straight passed me when I approached the bar. I was directly in front of the barman no more that 2 ft way. I looked around expecting another customer to be there being served or some thing. But no one else was to the side or behind me ??? Expecting him to make a greeting, nothing was forthcoming. He seemed to be passed out on his feet, I don't know if I'd became temporarily invisible. After what seemed like an a age, I thought I better get his attention and ask if there was a table was available. I received a grunted 'only in the bar' and was handed a dog-eared menu but not told there was a specials board. I only realised there was one when I heard him tell another customer. Coach and Horses, this guy needs pulling to one side. Those first few seconds when you walk in to an establishment is the make or break time. I've never experienced any thing like it. I glanced over to the bar occasionally while eating our lunch I noticed his performance wasn't much improved with any one entering after we did. However the ladies serving the table were extremely pleasant and their attitude made up some what for Mr Frosty. The...

We were recommended Coaches and Horses by the manager of The Old Dog pub after a long hike in Dovedale. Since our group was too large for The Old Dog’s new pre-booking policy, they kindly rang ahead to Coaches and Horses to ensure we could be accommodated.

Unfortunately, from the moment we arrived, the experience was poor. We were greeted by an unfriendly, unwelcoming older gentleman whose hostile attitude made us feel like an inconvenience rather than paying customers. Despite the unpleasant welcome, we decided to stay due to exhaustion and hunger after our hike.

When ordering, we asked for a large bowl of chips, but were told curtly that they only serve a “normal size bowl.” We accepted this and placed the order. After waiting 45 minutes, what we received was truly shocking—£3.50 for a tiny portion that couldn’t have contained more than 6 chips. It felt like a joke.

The combination of rude customer service, excessive wait times, and extremely poor value for money made this a truly disappointing stop. We won’t be returning, and I wouldn’t recommend it to others, especially groups or hikers looking for a warm welcome and a...

Very disappointed. After reading many positive reviews we had a very ordinary experience when we visited. On arrival I noted two hand-pulled cask ales on offer. One was Pedigree and I couldn't make out the writing on the pump clip of the second. I asked the barman what the ale was. "Pale", was his enlightening response. I ordered a pint and I wasn't impressed. I stuck with it for about 15 minutes and after struggling to drink much more than half a pint, I returned it to the bar and ordered a Pedigree which was better. The food was very disappointing. My dish of lamb casserole was mainly a huge stodgy dumpling. The sauce was tasty but there wasn't much of it. My wife's steak was supposed to be medium but it came well done. It was very dry and lacking in flavour. We don't like to make a fuss so we didn't complain but we shall not be returning. As we left I noted that the first pint I had was the last out of the barrel and a different ale was on. I still got charged ÂŁ5.20 for the first...
