SLURRY !!!!!!!!!! We packed up our tent and dog at 11 pm (yes pm) on the second night of our 4 day stay at the peak district. The Duke of York made our stay to the worst camping experience I’ve ever had since 20 years of camping!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Here we go Duke of York, I think you expected this. I have lots of time to write this because we drove back home. We sat in front of our tent at 10.00 pm enjoyed the view - trying to tune out the noise of the road - till a farmer decided to spread SLUURY next to use. He came 4 times fully loaded After he started spreading his SLURRY right behind us, from where the wind was blowing, I decided to ask the Duke of York if they could not stop it, and I got a NO. Can you imagine that smell !!!!!!!!!!!!!! after 30 minutes I felt so sick, and shocked that no one warned us. WE would have moved our tent and wouldn’t have said a thing. Lovely grazing fields around the campsite, with just little stone walls to separate campsite with farmland, lucky us to have had the little stone wall. I grow up right beside a farm and I knew if we’ve stayed here we would have smelled for the rest of our 1 week holiday. In the PUB they had no sympathy for us at all. NO CUSTORMER SERVICE !!! They started laughing and said: “this is the country side love” and we were funny from the begging on because of asking friendly if we could change our booking. We accepted the no we got, as it was our mistake booking this campsite at the first place. From that point on I knew why we asked, as we arrived , I just had a bad feeling about this place. I won’t start writing about… the grass not cut, no bin bags, the tent pitch is on a sloop, designated dog walking fields can´t be used as due to SLURRY, noisy road ……………
I feel very sorry for this place and wish them all the best to survive. As it was summer holidays and all other campsites we passed where nearly fully booked. The Duke of York was the one with a couple of caravans and us.
Hope to find a closure now. Oh yes we did not get a cent back, as we should aspect camping beside SLURRY on our holiday ;-)
But I think the DUKE of YORK needs the 100 pounds for 4 nights, more than we...
Read moreWe live in Nottingham and wanted a campsite close enough but still with fantastic scenery so opted for a campsite in Buxton, Derbyshire. First time with our 5 month old puppy so also wanted a dog friendly site. Opted for the Duke of York. We stumbled across the pub a few years back and recalled that they also had a campsite attached. Booking the campsite was hassle free. Emails between ourselves and Bridget were easy. We were here from Friday to Sunday with our friends who had a vintage caravan. Very sizeable pitch each. Needed our chocks for levelling which wasn’t a problem. Amazing views. We immediately felt at home here. Toilet block had two showers and 5 or so toilets. Clean and spacious (especially showers... didn’t have to worry about clothes getting wet!) Very relaxed site but with clear (common sense) rules eg cleaning up after dog. We ventured into Buxton for one of the days and highly recommend the Ale Stop. Very welcoming and dog friendly pub. We ate in the Duke of York on the Saturday. Book in advance especially with dog because they only have a few tables with dogs. Again no problem for us. Really enjoyed the food. Home cooked chips always a bonus! Lovely evening with other guests (and their dogs) we managed to leave our rucksack behind and quickly reunited as we were leaving the toilets (thank you) Cant understand the negative reviews and we are seasoned campers. Will definitely be back especially as so convenient to where we live. The ONLY recommendation would be to offer recycling when it comes to waste, but not sure I what the local provision is. A really lovely...

Excellent modern toilet and shower block including disabled facilities. There's washing up sinks, bins and recycling, and chemical disposal point. 10 / 10 for the campsite. The pub is very welcoming with log burners in both the pub and the restaurant. The bar area is dog friendly. We enjoyed tasty meals at sensible prices. I would say they were restaurant quality food, definitely not pub grub. Real ales and an extensive range of gins helped make our evenings enjoyable. Bridget and staff , especially Hayley were efficient, and helpful throughout. There was a coffee morning on the Sunday which had cakes including some made on site. I'm sure they made lots of money for Macmillan cancer care. The pub has a walks leaflet, with 3 walks of varying distances that were easy to follow. We had a gentle stroll along the local trail ( flat walk and a pub 3/4 mile away.) Some of the group did longer walks. All routes starting directly from the site and not involving roads. Definitely a place I would recommend whether attending for a meal and drink or staying on...
