What a lovely cafe! We arrived late in the day, around 4:15. Despite it being the end of the day, Emma (who is a *delight*) cooked us up a tasty, filling, and affordable late lunch! My wife and I split a carafe of French pressed coffee (dark and tasty), a toasted cheese and onion sandwich which came with a little side of salad, and the Vegetarian Breakfast. The veg breakfast is two pieces of thick toast done to a light golden brown topped with scrambled eggs and sauteed mushrooms. The eggs were perfect, still moist and not overly firm, but definitely cooked through. The mushrooms had a light sear on them - delicious, and I don't usually like mushrooms. On the side there were some barbecue beans and a roasted tomato. All of this came to £10.50! We left with full bellies and new knowledge about the area. Did you know there were once 72 pubs in Wirksworth?! We want to come back on a Saturday to try the Full English Breakfast (weekends only). Definitely recommend!

It’s only a small cafe so feels nice and cosy. It’s quite rustic looking. The food is made and prepared in the cafe part so you can smell it cooking. The staff were really nice and the food was freshly cooked. The cakes looked and tasted great. The scones were huge! The toasted sandwiches were made with nice bread and came with a lovely side salad and delicious homemade coleslaw. The toasted sandwich was £8 but good value compared to many places and a very good portion size. It was delicious. My friends had the pecan and cinnamon cake as loved it

I needed a late lunch and this place was still open at 2.50pm. We sat in a quiet but very shabby courtyard. I'd a bacon and cheese toastie with a side salad and coleslaw, my wife had an onion Baji toastie with salad and coleslaw. Tasty. We shared a pot of tea. £8 for each sandwich was more expensive than expected, considering the rough ambience. No sign of the Sour Cow name nowadays.

We moved to Wirksworth January this year and found the Sour Cow to be highly recommended by the locals.

Having decided we didn't want to cook this Saturday we took the dogs for a stroll and treated ourselves to a vegetarian breakfast, poached eggs on toast, a latte and a pot of tea.

Just delicious! The veggie breakfast was HUGE! Well cooked and full of flavour (scrambled eggs, fried mushrooms and potatoes, beans, tomatoes with 2 fairly thick slices of toast). Be hungry if you order it - you have been warned. The paached egss were a little small in comparison to the toast but just equally tasty, tough the husband was a bit disappointed with some of the water making his toast soggy.

A pot of tea which seemed endless and the latte stayed hot for ages.

Happy dogs under the table and joyful bellied around it. Especially as we took a slice of the chocolate cake home (again a disappointed husband who didn't keep up as I ate most of it) and devoured it happily. Next time we might have to get a selection!

Cosy, friendly, a team of bubbly staff and a menu which can and will be adapted as much as possible to suit your desires. What more can you ask for for the price? Very much looking forward to being...

This is a difficult review to post as the low rating isn't regarding the food, that is very tasty. It's regarding the arrogance of the lady in the kitchen. Her assumption of where I'm from I found highly offensive. I've been in the cafe several times now and this was my experience today. Apparently they have been trying to work out where I'm from. Today I got, oh no he's not South African, he's Australian which I'm not.... it's NZ. Upon correcting her I got " oh it's all the same isn't it? " Why don't you just ask if you want to know as now you have a very unhappy and disgruntled customer....I just don't...
